Lot 44- Recentissima Novi Orbis sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula
35. Western Hemisphere (La Florida & Guastecan Reg. & Pervviae
Avriferae Regionis Typvs), Ortelius, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp, ca.
1598. 18.2 x 13.2". (FC) One of the very few 16th century maps based on Spanish
sources; in this case drawn from reports of Hernando de Sotos expedition through the
region. There are three maps on this sheet. The most important map (La Florida) is the
first printed map of the south-eastern portion of the United States. This influential map
provided the foundation cartography for the region, particularly in the depiction of the
river system. The second map (Cuastecan Reg) combines with "La Florida" to
extend the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico further south. The third is a map of Peru,
where de Soto was the first Spaniard to meet Inca Emperor Atahuallpa. From a French
edition. Ref: Burden #57 and van den Broecke #15. Strong crisp impression with original
color. Margins and a bit of border has been water damaged, with professional restoration
to stabilize the paper, including a crack in the map near the Peru cartouche. Restoration
is well done, leaving map in very good condition. (B) $1400-1500
36. Western Hemisphere (Americae
Descrip.), Mercator/Hondius, Atlas Minor, Amsterdam, [1607-21]. 7.6 x
6". (FC) A reduced version of the America map Hondius engraved for Gerard
Mercators folio atlas, it is a combination of various cartographic sources. North
America is greatly elongated with a Plancius type depiction of Newfoundland and a
protruding Virginia coast. South America is shown with a more or less correct western
coastline and there is a large southern continent. Latin text on verso. Decorated with sea
monsters, sailing ships, and a strapwork title cartouche. Fine later color. Ref: Burden
#153. (A) $600-700
37. Western Hemisphere (America),
Hondius, Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographia, Amsterdam, [1628]. 19.6
x 14.7". (FC) Fabulous example of fine Dutch cartography decorated with cartouches, a
large scene of Brazilian natives brewing and partaking of a ceremonial beverage, sea
monsters, indigenous birds, native canoes and sailing vessels. The sterographic projection
is based on various sources. It corrects the western coastline of South America. However,
North America is still enlarged. Newfoundland is based on Plancius, and Virginia is overly
exaggerated. The coastlines are fully engraved with place names. Ref: Burden #150.
Professional repair of centerfold and margins, including paper replacement affecting a
small area of the border, with excellent facsimile of neatline. Beautifully colored in the
correct style. $3,250 RESERVE. (A) $4500-5500

noviter delineata), Merian, Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica, Frankfurt, ca.

England coastline. The western coastline above California makes the continent entirely too
wide. There is only a hint of the Great Lakes. There is a large inland lake in equatorial
South America. Small inset of Greenland. Strapwork title cartouche with a sea monster and
Spanish galleons decorate the map. Fine, very crisp impression with Merian signature lower
