The following four lots are very early copper engravings from Theodorede Bry’s Grand Voyages. This collection of early voyages (published between 1591 and 1634) are among the first accounts of the New World and the mysterious orient. They are considered one of the most important of their kind.

321. Die Pocahuntas eines Konigs…, 7 x 6". (BW) Very fine impression of this scene which depicts the abduction of Pocahontas, who was captured and used as ransom to get back several explorers captured by her father, Powhatan. On a full sheet of German text. (A+) Illustrated at top of page.   $350-400

87-322322. Eines alten Manns von Pomeiooc…, 8.5 x 6". (BW) A Pomeiooc (Virginian) elder is shown in his winter garment, consisting of a large animal hide tied over his shoulder. Behind him is a native village and surrounding countryside. Binder’s trim to neatline on right. Tear in margin repaired with tissue. (A) $275-325

87-323323. Wie die Franzosenandas Konigliche, 8.5 x 6". (BW) The print records the French discovery and naming of Port Royal in present day Florida. It depicts their ships anchored at the mouth of the river and an exploration party in a small boat in the river. The land is filled with turkeys, deer and an Indian village. The villagers were feasting on a small wolf and fled when they saw the explorers. Whereupon, the French named the place Wolf’s Point. On a full sheet of German text, with no text verso. Binders trim to neatline on right, else fine. (A) $350-400

324. De Summorum indicum gestatione per publicum, & tortura cui adhibentur malefici, 7 x 5.7". (BW) Macabre depiction of various forms of Chinese torture. Crisp impression. (A) $45-60

 

The following nine lots are from the monumental work, Picturesque California, published by the famous naturalist John Muir in 1888. Muir wanted to share the natural beauty of the West with a wider audience, and employed several famous artists for the project. Each print is a finely rendered photogravure, measuring about 12" x 9", and is on a full 19" x 14" sheet of fine heavy paper. All have their original tissue guard printed with title, artist and some include a quote by Muir. 

87-325325. Protestant Orphan Asylum, Victor Perard. Busy scene on the beautifully landscaped grounds of the San Francisco orphanage. In the foreground a governess supervises children walking and playing while a nanny pushes a rattan carriage. In the background stands the fine edifice of the church and associated buildings. 87-326326. White Oaks, Near Menlo Park, James Fagan. Scene of a typical day in the park with children playing circle games and kick ball in the background while in the foreground, a family picnics under the old oak trees. (A) $50-60

 


87-327327. Palm Valley, Thomas Hill. On the border of San Diego County, the beauty of California’s nearby mountains and tall palm trees surrounds this valley of agave and prickly-pear cactus inhabited by Native Americans. (A)  Illustrated at left.   $35-5087-328

328. Fall in North Wall of Bloody Canon, George Spiel. The leaves have turned while the evergreens stand dwarfed against the magnificent layered heights of the canyon walls where a rushing stream begins its spill down to the wash below. (A+)   Illustrated at right.   $35-45

329. A Bit of Mendocino Coast, C.D. Robinson. Low tide at the mouth of the Navarro River delivers a rocky shoreline edged by larger boulders and cliffs with multiple waves crashing on shore. (A) $40-60

87-330330. Santa Barbara Mission, J.P. Robertson. Another authentic scene of early California life with the majesty of the great mission overseeing the farm lands nearby as workers care-take the fields and work with horse-drawn plow. (A) $60-80

87-331331. Home of the Pioneer, Julian Rix. You can practically feel the gentle breeze moving through the high grass and trees in the foreground as geese scramble in the yard, a short distance from the cozy, fire-lit home in the background. (A) $30-40

87-332332. Lone Cypress - Midway Point - Monterey, Julian Rix. Muir’s comment perfectly describes the scene: "Down almost to the water grows the cypress, and on the extreme point a solitary tree has sunk its roots in the crevices of the wave-washed rock, and defies the battle of the elements that rage about it during the storms of winter." 333. Peak-Glacier of Sir Donald, John A. Fraser. Viewed from the Illecillewaet, near Ross Peak. Two riders on horseback cross a fallen-log bridge over rushing waters in the foreground surrounded by awe inspiring scenery of forest wilderness and steep glacial peaks. (A+) $30-40

87-335335. New York (Pierpont’s Distillery on Long Island), Itenerriar Pettoresque du Fleuve Hudson, ca. 1825. 12 x 10". (FC) Lovely, hand-colored lithograph from this important work by J. Milbert. The scene is full of fishing boats with sailing ships in background. Couple of tiny tears in margin, with some light surface soil. Decoratively matted. (A) $270-300

87-336336. New York (Tomb of Washington), Augustus Kollner-Views of American Cities, New York, 1848. 13.5 x 11". (FC) Very fine large, hand-colored lithograph. Kollner’s American views were very influential in the mid nineteenth century. In front of the tomb are several people strolling and lounging in the park. Decoratively matted. Tiny bit of very light foxing, barely visible. (A) $350-400

87-338338. Europe (Aloude Kleedy en wapenrusting der Batavische mannen), Jan van Loon, Amsterdam, [1734]. 15.5 x 12". (BW) Lovely copper engraved view of a group of people in native dress and weaponry. They appear to be negotiating a peace treaty, as there are large armies in the background. The Batavians were a tribe inhabiting the Low Countries during Roman times. Split on fold, just entering image. (B) $60-80

87-339339. Britain (Lot of 44 English Engravings), anon., London, ca. 1750. 7 x 4". (BW) Great set of copper engravings of important sites around Britain. Includes Stonehenge, Windsor Palace, and several fine castles and cathedrals. Light overall toning, a bit of marginal foxing on a few plates. (A) $300-350

Includes a city view of Amsterdam by Mallet (c. 1683) with numerous ships in the harbor, a view of the Admiralty Office and docks in Amsterdam engraved for Middleton’s Geography, a view of the Statehouse in Amsterdam (c. 1725, a battle scene at Amsterdam (no date), and a quaint scene of a Dutch man and woman (1792). 342. South East Asia (Lot of nine lithographs), Voyage Autour, Paris, [1839]. 7.5 x 9.5". (BW) Group of nine original stone lithographs on India paper published by Hartet et Ozanne. Includes several striking images of the peoples of Timor and Ombay in full native costume complete with weaponry, as well as three landscapes all by J. Arago. Light scattered foxing in margins, with only a couple of images affected. (B) $90-110

87-343343. Pacific (Set of three prints), Dumont D’Urville, Voyage de la Corvette l’Astrolabe, Paris, c. 1830. 10 x 13.5". (BW) Three fine stone lithographs. "Danse Guerriers, executee chez le Resident ‘hollandais’, (Bourou)" depicts a ritual sword dance. "Aiguade de la Praya" is a fine scene of the village well with natives and seamen filling various containers. Consultation a l’Esprit our un enfant malade (Tona Tobou)" shows villagers seated around the village headman. All with the embossed seal, enclosed in the original subscription folder. The text sheet identifies the dog as the only Specimen of this breed in the country and identifies the breed as being on the verge of extinction. Decoratively matted. (A+) $130-150

 

The following lots are from the Naturalist’s Library - Ornithology, edited by Sir William Jardine, London, circa 1840. Each is a copper engraving by the firm of Lizars & Co. They are approximately 6.5" x 4", and have uncolored backgrounds with hand-colored birds.

87-350350. Pair of prints, Volume X, Parrots. The Purple-Capped Lory is Plate 18, displaying wonderful colors of fuchsia, bright pale green and gold. Highlights of blue-purple crown his head and wings. Plate 12, the Southern Nestor (illustrated), is a lovely compliment with feathers of red, brown tones with touches of yellow and pink. (A) $35-45

351. Pair of prints, Volume I, Birds of Prey. The White Owl is white bodied with soft shades of browns to taupe. The most delicate of feathers appear very light blue at the wing tips and around the eyes. The second print is a close-up of the White Owl’s head. (A) $35-50

87-352352. Pair of prints, Volume I, Birds of Prey. Plates 11 and 12 are the magnificent Golden Eagle. While the first print is the distinguishing eggs of the Golden Eagle and Osprey, the second print displays the adult eagle about to take flight. Colors range from soft whites and yellows to rich shades of strong browns and greys. (A) $35-50

87-353353. Pair of prints, Volume I, Birds of Prey. Plate 15 depicts the silver-blue Swallow-Tailed Nauclerus (illustrated) ready to take flight to the valley below. His wing feathers are tapered in brown while his body is light blue to white. The Neophron, Plate 1, stands proudly with his mate both cloaked in feathers of silver-blue to brown with bodies of light blue, buff and white. (A) $40-60

356. Birds (Lot of three prints), U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Survey - California, ca. 1850. 6.7 x 9.2". (FC) Set of three hand-colored lithographs from the California railroad surveys. Plates IX, VIII, and V. Plates are not named. (A) $75-100

 

The following six prints are from the Birds of North America compiled by S.F. Baird, Washington, D.C., 1860. These plates were originally drawn for the various railroad surveys made across the western United States, and are for the most part, the first drawings made of the particular species. They are hand-colored lithographs, approximately 9" x 7".

357. 1. Podiceps Dominicus. 2.. Thalassidroma Melania. The coloring is especially beautiful. Soft silver-blues, buff, white and grey accentuate this print of one bird air-borne and the other in the water. (A+) $35-45

358. 1. Helminthophaga Virginae. 2. Oporornis Agilis. 3. Geothlypis Philadelphia. 4. G. Macgillivrayi. A family of birds (two full specimens perched on a branch, and two details of heads) colored impeccably in bright yellow, soft but bright olive green, tan and silver-blue. (A+) $35-45

359. Ceryle Americana. 1. Adult, 2. Young. Perched one above the other, these beautiful birds are colored in iridescent green with wing markings of black and white "dashes and dots". The beaks are highlighted on the underside with a yellow stripe, and the adult presents a reddish-brown chest. Most unusual black and white tail feathers. (A+) $35-45

 

360. Aegialitis Nivosa. 1. Male, 2. Female. An adorable pair crossing one another’s path on soft green grass. They are colored white with buff, tan to gray and black feathers and markings. (A+) $30-40

361. 1. Chroicocephalus Cucullatus. 2. C. Franklinii. A cute pair watching by the shore, one above the other with similar coloring of silver-blues, black accent markings on the heads and white bellies. They are distinguished from each other by the black and white designs in the tail feathers (one white tipped, the other black scalloped). (A+) $35-45

362. Podiceps Occidentalis. A handsome duck of soft browns, taupe and white belly with full coloring in the detailed background of reeds and shore. (A) $35-45

87-363363. Fish (Spanish Mackerel), Samuel A. Kilbourne, Game Fishes of the United States, Boston, ca. 1878. 19.5 x 14". (PC) Beautifully rendered chromolithograph in fine condition. The mackerels are leaping from the water with a very tropical scene ashore and tall ships in the background. Very well colored. (A+) $250-350

 

The following two lots are from The Naturalist’s Library - Entomology - Volume XXIX (Butterflies), edited by Sir William Jardin, London, circa 1840. Each is a copper engraving by the famous firm of Lizars & Co. They measure approximately 6.5" x 4" with uncolored backgrounds, usually flowers, and delicately hand-colored butterflies

Plates No. 7, 25, and 34, which include several butterflies on each print, carefully colored in soft whites, gold, pale green and a delightful range of rust shades to browns. Plate No. 1 is uncolored and depicts various parts of the flowers on which the butterflies feed. (A)   One plate illustrated at left. $70-90

From caterpillars to butterflies, Plates No. 3, 8, and 9 detail some of the magnificent variations in nature with shades of pale greens, soft whites, pale orange and black detail.. The following lots are from A History of British Butterflies, Seventh Edition by Rev. F.O. Morris, published in 1893 in London. Each is a delicately rendered chromolithograph, hand-finished often with gum arabic. Each is on a full sheet, approximately 6.8 x 10.5". At a minimum each has a side view and top view; both with wings in full view. Other images, as noted below, include the related caterpillar, larvae and other variations in coloring between genders. The butterfly images are generally 1" to 1.5" across.

87-382382. African American history (Pair of political cartoons), Thomas Nast, Harper’s Weekly, New York, 1875-84. 10 x 15". (BW) Pair of wood engravings, both full page. First on the front page including masthead, is titled "One of the First-fruits of the Victory" depicts President-elect Cleveland with a white Southerner and a Negro shaking hands. Second with two engravings, one depicting the hands of Columbia handing a Civil Rights Bill to a Negro, and another commenting on the fact that the proposed Civil Right Bill would not give the Negro the right to drink in a saloon. 383. Native Americans (Koning en Koningin vab de Missisippi), anon., ca. 1670. 7 x 10.5". (BW) Early copper engraving, possibly by Ogilby, of a family of Native Americans of the Mississippi valley. 384. Military (To Sir Jon Percivale Bart of Burton in the County of Corke in Ireland), W. Hollar, London, ca. 1652. 7.7 x 12". (BW) Fine copper engraving by this famous Bohemian artist. The print depicts a fierce Roman battle with the dedication at bottom including the coat of arms. Wenceslaus Hollar was the major topographical draughtsman of his day and was appointed Stenographus Regius by Charles II in 1666. (A) $80-100

(BW) Nice set of early half-tone prints of Civil War generals, in full uniform and mounted on a fine horse. Includes Hooker at Lookout Mountain, McClellan at Antietam, Sherman at Atlanta, Grant in the Wilderness, and Logan at Vicksburg. All signed in the plate by Edwin Forbes. (A+) $120-140

(BW) Pair of very intrusting prints: Fori Vulcani sive Camporum Phlegraeorum Typus, which depicts large subterranean lava fields next to a walled city. Tabula Catadupam Velini Fluminis… depicts a river valley with several villages, a large waterfall and what appears to be a village under several storm clouds. Both have nice title cartouche & crisply engraved lines. On full sheets of Latin text. (A+) $100-120

The engraving is by Benjamin West, Historical Painter to his Majesty. He dedicates the plate to "her Imperial Majesty of all the Russia’s". Large engraved picture frame border with the Russian royal crest. Small chip in margin. (A) $40-50

87-413413. Miscellaneous (Lot of four etchings), P.G. Hamerton, London, ca. 1861. 6 x 3.5". (BW) Fine set of etchings by the British artist & critic. He wrote many articles and books and is best remembered for Etching and Etchers, 1868 and The Portfolio, 1870-92 that included many of his own etchings. Each numbered and titled by hand in bottom margin. Three depict a man traveling down an unknown river by canoe. The fourth is a view of houses at Etang. (A+) $60-80
