islands of the Caribbean, which includes those parts of the United States & Mexico
that border the Gulf of Mexico, Central America, and the northern coastline of South
America. Routes of several explorers are shown with many coastal place names. Attractive
recent color, in outline, with a fully colored decorative title cartouche and border.
Minor repair of small hole affecting one letter of Mer du Sud, else fine. $275

ca. 1780. 12.2 x 8". (FC) Attractive map covering the region from west Florida
through California and Northern Mexico. In Texas there is a city named Texas and a
notation concerning the death of the explorer La Salle. Excellent detail, particularly of
the Jesuit missions in Mexico and the Southwest. In present day Arizona the Gila River is
named Rio de los Apostolos. Fine example with attractive recent color & on

Ortelius, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp, [1579-84]. 19.2 x 13.7".
(FC) Two great maps within one border. First covers the region of western Mexico around
Culiacan and the second is of the Greater Antilles. This important map is the first
detailed map of the Caribbean and one of the first to detail western Mexico. Includes an
interesting error, in that the Tropic of Capricorn is shown on the Mexican map where the
Tropic of Cancer should be. Latin text on verso with page number 7. Ref: van den Broecke
#14. Margin trimmed close (1/8") at right with a bit of an old library stamp just

131. Mexico (Hispaniae Nova Nova
Descriptio), Hondius, Amsterdam, ca. 1613. 19 x 13.5". (FC) Splendid, decorative map
of the western coastal regions of Mexico. Mexico City is situated on a large lake with
several gold and silver mines located in the central region. On the west coast is a large
inland sea filled with islands where the natives were reported to extract salt. The map is
fully decorated with an elaborate, strapwork title cartouche and two other cartouches. A
Spanish galleon and a fanciful sea monster occupy the Pacific. Lovely old color, including
a colored historated capital in the Latin text on verso. (A) $625-700

132. Mexico (Aquapolque), Theodore de Bry, ca. 1630. 8.6 x
5.7". (BW) Early view of the colonial settlement at Acapulco, which the Spanish used
as the principal port for their Pacific trade with the Philippines. The harbor is filled
with galleons and a large sea monster. On the shoreline, livestock is being loaded onto
boats, a colonial delegation is being received, and at the same time there appears to be a
battle raging in the fort. Some marginal soil and tears, engraving very good. (A) $200-230

Quitmans Report), U.S. War Dept., Sen. Doc No. 1, 30th Congress, 1st Ses.,
[1847]. 17.7 x 13". (OC) This map shows the headquarters and positions of the
American forces, south of Chepultepec, batteries, weaponry etc. But most interestingly it
depicts, by hand coloring, the positions of Mexican troops and the route of the American
forces during the assault on Mexico City. Folding, as issued. Lightly toned. (A) $100-120

10.5 x 14". (BW) Detailed map depicting the positions of batteries, headquarters,
troops, and buildings on the outskirts of Mexico City. Includes the roads and aqueducts to
Garita San Cosme and Belin Garita. Folding, as issued. Light offsetting, else fine. (A) $75-90

Line of Operations of the U.S. Army under the command of Major General Winfield Scott on
the 8th, 12th, and 13th of September 1847), U.S. War Dept., Sen. Doc No. 1, 30th
Congress, 1st Ses., Philadelphia, 1847. 21.7 x 28". (BW) Large folding
map, surveyed by Maj. Turnbull (with his signature in the plate), Capt. McClellan, and Lt.
Hardcastle, Corps of Topographical Engineers. Shows the position of American forces
outside of Molino De Rey and Chapultepec with the Mexican forces between Molino Del Rey
and Mexico City. Very detailed, with roads, churches, haciendas, etc. Very faint foxing
and fold reinforced with archival tape, but overall very good. (B) $100-120

Attractive map that has excellent hand coloring to depict the states. Includes the Baja,
most of Texas and part of Arizona and New Mexico. Inset of the isthmus of Tehuantepec with
the proposed railway. Decorative scroll border. (A) $40-50

(Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, alias Bermudas
), John Ogilby, America, London,
ca. 1671. 14 x 11.5". (FC) One of the most decorative of Bermuda maps with a large
cartouche depicting Neptune with mermaids, sea monsters and cherubs, two coats of arms, a
compass rose, rhumb lines and a pictorial scale of miles with Natives and Europeans. The
island is divided among various "Tribes" with a table at bottom detailing the
divisions. Couple of unobtrusive spots, professionally repaired centerfold and partial
remargin at top. (A) $1100-1300

ca. 1706. 8.7 x 6". (BW) Handsomely engraved small map of the islands that also
includes the tip of Florida and part of Hispanola. Title block, compass rose, and a large
scale of miles surmounted by two cherubs holding a portrait of Christopher Columbus.
Barely noticeable toning on folds, overall fine with a superb impression. (A) $300-350

political division between the French and Spanish colonies. Fully engraved with mountains,
towns, and harbors. Floral scroll title cartouche. Repaired worm track in margin, just

colored with Coltons classic border. Puerto Rico is shown in an inset. Great detail

Handsome map of the whole of South America based on Ortelius. The great southern
continent, Terrae Australis, stretches the length of the map at bottom. A large
galleon sails the Pacific, and a sea monster along with a strapwork title cartouche adorns
the Atlantic. Stipple engraved oceans and strong engraving make this a very attractive
map. Several worm holes filled, all very professionally done and only noticeable from the
verso, and there is a small stain near cartouche. Still a very good example of this

13.2". (BW) Stunning map enclosed in an elaborate, picture frame style, engraved
border with a large title cartouche featuring natives, ship, crocodile, snake and
tortoise. Good detail in the interior and coastlines. Routes of the explorers in the
Pacific over to the Soloman Islands. Light impression in one small area, else extremely
fine. (A+) $425-500

decorative floral border. Each attractively colored with fine detail throughout. Minor
discoloration in margins, else fine. (A) $15-25
144. South America (Johnsons South America), Johnson &
Ward, New York, [1862]. 17 x 24.2". (FC) Nice continent map with depictions of the
major explorers routes. Extends south to South Shetland Islands. Uncolored vignette of
Cape Horn. Attractive blue full wash in the ocean, bright color, very strong impression,
strapwork border. Small area of very light toning at center fold. (A) $25-35
145. Northeastern South America (Guiana
sive Amazonum Regio), Blaeu, Amsterdam, c. 1630. 20 x 14.5". (FC) Handsome map
extends from the Isla Margarita in the northwest to the coast of northern Brazil, near Sao
Luis, east of the Amazon delta. The map locates at its center a large inland sea, Parime
Lacus, on whose northwestern shore lies the fabled city Manoa, o el Dorado, or the
golden city of the Incas. The search for this city led many explorers, including Sir
Walter Raleigh, on wild adventures. The map is beautifully decorated with three
cartouches, ships, sea battles, monsters and a fine compass rose. Small spots in border

15". (FC) Decorative map of the Isthmus of Panama through most present day Columbia
and part of Venezuela. Richly decorated with two fine compass roses and two cartouches,
all fully colored. Professionally repaired split on fold and marginal tear, else very
clean and fine condition. (A) $450-500

del Fuogo, which is unexplored on the west. Depicts the tract of Guillaume Schouten
and Jacob Le Maire with the discovery of Le Maire Straight and the route south of
Tierra de Fuego. Reference "Mercators Magazine", July/August 1998 for a
fascinating article on the history of this region. Strapwork title cartouche and two
compass roses with rhumb lines. On a sheet of German text with no text on verso. Mild

Meridionalis, a Rio de la Plata per Fretum Magellanicum ad Toraltum), Renard, Amsterdam,
ca. 1715. 21.5 x 19". (FC) Great sea chart of the tip of South America showing the
coasts (in outline color) from La Plata to Chili with Tierra del Fuego, the Strait of
Magellan and Le Maire Strait & Cape Hoorn. Very large, fully colored, title cartouche
depicts a group of natives, mining and refining gold over a furnace, with Spanish
conquistadors supervising the operations. In the Atlantic, a fierce sea battle rages and
the map is further decorated with rhumb lines and compass roses. Couple of minor repairs
along centerfold, else fine and clean, on thick paper. $600 RESERVE (A) $750-850
