The following lots are large (11 x 16") sheets of vellum with beautifully written manuscript, four-line music. Each is written on both sides in brown and red ink, with large red and blue capitals. They are from a 14th century Catholic Graduale, which was sung from the altar steps.

The following three lots are from an early Book of Hours, written in 13-line Gothic Textura script in brown and red ink, on a fine sheet of vellum measuring approximately 4.5 x 6.2". Each side is decorated with numerous illuminated capitals and decorations in gold-leaf, red and blue ink.

The following lots are leaves from Liber Chronicarum, popularly known as The Nuremberg Chronicle. This was a milestone in the history of printing, published by Hartmann Schadel in 1493. It was a complete history of the world and contained views, portraits, and scenes related to classical and Biblical history (many of them imaginary), as well as many of the first printed views of cities and towns throughout the known world.

87-420420. Folio LII. 11 x 16.5". (BW) A fine leaf with both sides decorated with two full length panels of portraits, one of which depicts a man with a pair of eyeglasses. (A+) Illustrated at left.  $140-160

421. Madeburga (Folio CLXXX). 20.5 x 8". (FC) Beautiful double page view of the city of Magdeburg, Germany with numerous steeples and a large boat in the river. Verso includes several portraits and the depiction of a comet. Both sides with very fine color in the style of the period. Couple of professional repairs of binding holes on fold, else very clean and bright. (A) Illustrated above.   $1000-1100

87-42287-422verso422. Parisius (Folio XXXIX). 8.7 x 7.7". (BW) Fabulous early view of Paris with an equally impressive view of Mainz on the verso. A bit of light foxing, but overall very good. (A) $800-900

423. Ulma (Foilio CXCI). 20.5 x 7.7". (BW) Stunning double page view of the walled city of Ulm with the river and large bridge in the foreground. Verso includes several other nice illustrations including portraits and a church. Professionally repaired tear at bottom, just entering image and now invisible, and old marginal repair. Very crisp impression. (A) Illustrated above.  $900-1000

424. Constantinoplis (Folio CXXX). 20.7 x 9.2". (BW) One of the earliest available views of the city. Numerous mosques dominate the skyline and a large ship is in foreground. Latin text on verso (with several fine woodblock illustrations of the emperor Constantine and his descendants). Very good impression with small old manuscript ink title at top in image. Old repair of binding holes along fold, with light toning and marginal spots at bottom. (B)  Illustrated above.   $1100-130087-425

87-425425. Ninive (Folio XX). 9 x 5.5". (BW) This is a great view of the medieval Assyrian capital. On verso is a three quarter page illustration of a family tree with numerous portraits. Small marginal tears, professionally repaired. (A) $200-250

426. Rauenna (Folio CXLII). 8.7 x 7.7". (FC) Beautiful page featuring the hillside town on one side, with portraits of popes on the verso, all in full original color. A bit of light toning and damp stain in lower margin. (A) $400-450

427. Nissa (CCLXI). 20.5 x 8". (FC) Double page view of Neisse in Silesia, now Poland. The walled city surrounds a magnificent cathedral, with numerous other towers and steeples. Attractive later color with some bleed through to verso. One side of sheet toned with some unobtrusive restoration along fold. Verso includes a woodblock illustration of a king. The following lots are leaves from Missale ... Archiefpiscopatus Pragensis Ecclesiae, Venice, 1507. Each is on a 12 x 8" sheet of fine hand-laid paper, printed in red and black ink. They are from a very rare book containing the office of the Catholic Mass and are exceedingly early examples of fine printing and Gothic woodblock illustration.

431. Book of Hours leaf, Hordouyn, Horae B.V.M. Secundumusum Romanvorn, Paris, [1526]. 4.2 x 7". Beautiful and unusual vellum sheet printed on both sides with Gothic textura type with illuminated capitals in red, blue and gold. The text is surrounded by elaborate scenes which are iron engraving, including a scene of the Virgin Mary and the Christ child. Printed vellum Book of Hours are very scarce as they were only produced between 1496 and 1530. (A+)  At right.   $120-15087-432

 

432. Book of Hours leaf, Hordouyn, Horae B.V.M. Secundumusum Romanvorn, Paris, [1526]. 4.2 x 7". Another fine leaf from this famous book. The surrounding engravings include a depiction of Christ bearing the cross. (A+) $120-150

 

 

433. Pair of printed leaves, Angelici Doctoris divi Thomas Aquinatis, Venice, [1547]. 7 x 10.5". (BW) From the work of the great 13th century theologian, Cardinal Thomas de Vio Gaitani. His commentary appears in smaller type surrounding the text of Aquinas, which is rendered in the traditional larger black letter type. Several four-line, woodcut initials. Nice examples of early printing by the famous firm of Luc’Antonio Giunta. (A+) $70-90

434. Printed leaf, (Ad Matutinum - 347), ca. 1560. 14 x 22". Very large printed leaf from an Italian Book of Psalms, Psalms 104. Large historated 3-line capital letter "C" and printed in black and red ink on very heavy paper. Museum mounted and matted. (A+) $150-200

436. Printed leaf (De Monacho faciendo), Pontificale Romanum ad Omnes Pontificale, Venice, [1582]. 10 x 15". Roman letter Latin text arranged in double columns within printed rules. Printed in red and black inks. Printed by M. Giunta, a highly regarded printing house. (A+) $40-50

 
 

87-437437. Calligraphy (Lot of five leaves), George Bickham, London, [1739]. 8 x 13". (BW) Bickman was the preeminent calligrapher of the 18th century. Five fine examples of calligraphy all related to business. Each is either an explanation of a specific document, i.e., Letter of Credit, an example of a type of business transaction, or an essay related to business ethics. All include beautiful script and two include a fine graphic illustration. Would be a fine set framed. (A) $100-130

 

438. Indenture, 1756. 21.5 x 14". Large vellum sheet with scalloped top edge , 3 blue tax stamps and 2 red wax seals. The manuscript is the Last Will and Testament of John Saunders and begins with very large calligraphy with the royal crest. Ink is slightly faded but still very legible. (A) $90-120

87-439439. Indenture, 1785. 14 x 8". Vellum indenture for the transfer of land to Davis Hewson in Durham England. Three tax stamps. Very legible. (A) $80-100

 

87-440440. Indenture, 1790. 14 x 8". Attractive English Will and Testament of William Wood. On vellum with a blue tax stamp. Nice even toning. (A) $80-100

87-441441. Civil War documents (Set of 3 documents), 1864. Set of documents related to artillery and ordinance, each hand written by the Ordinance Officer. Two single sheets recording the transfer of munitions, and a six page Monthly Return of Quartermaster’s Stores report. (A+)  At right.   $90-110

87-442442. Bonds (Confederate Bond), 1862. 14 x 14". (BW) Five hundred dollar bond issued by the Confederate States of America, Number 1284. Vignette of a C.S.A. cabinet officer. Complete with 30 coupons, due July 1, 1880. Folds and small tear in one coupon, without loss. (B) $120-140

87-443443. Bonds (Confederate Bond), 1863. 14 x 14". One hundred dollar bond with six coupons. Engraved with vignettes of a Confederate soldier and a paddle steamer. Printed on an unusual pinkish colored paper. Very light damp stain in top margin. (A) $120-14087-444
