(BW) Fine copper engraved bird’s eye view of the island with the city and its fortifications based on van Linschoten’s view. Foreground is filled with sailing ships in the harbor. Banner title flanked by 2 coats of arms. Crisp impression. Marginal split on centerfold, repaired with archival tape. (A) $240-280

87-151151. Atlantic (A New Draught of the Coast of Guinea and Brasile …), John Thornton, London, ca. 1700. 22.2 x 18.7". (OC) Uncommon sea chart, possibly from The English Pilot, Books III and IV of which were published by Thornton. The chart is a detailed view of the coastlines, with numerous place names. Inset of Trinidad Island with part of the notation "You may anchor on the west side of the island about a mile from the shore gradual soundings, here is good water but it is difficult to get into your boat, the land being very rocky". Fully colored title cartouche and compass rose. This chart was obviously used and there is a very faint ink notation of the route of a ship along the coast of South America. Toned at edges with close margin at top. (B) $350-400

(FC) Very unusual map with place names only along the coastlines. Depicts only the eastern part of North America, with the British colonies indicated. The other continents are shown in full. Numerous islands throughout the Atlantic. Later color with crisp impression, a compass rose and simple title block. (A+) $275-325

(FC) Fine map of Europe compiled from several of Ortelius’ contemporary cartographers, including Mercator, Magnus, Jenkinson, and Gastaldi. A ship sails in the stipple engraved ocean, below the title cartouche that features Europa riding a bull. Ref: van den Broecke #5. Tiny tear in margin, well away from map, which is very fine. (FC) Uncommon, large map of the continent with incredible detail, typical of 18th century Dutch cartography. The large (uncolored) cartouche is surrounded with grapevines and other fruit. A couple of minor spots of candlewax and an old repair on lower fold. (B) $500-600

(FC) Four bird’s eye views of fortified medieval cities, each with its own strapwork title cartouche. Further decorated with figures of a man and woman and two soldiers. Color a bit faded, else fine. (BW) Copper engraved Ptolemaic map covering the region from the Wista River eastward. Includes the Sea of Azov and the Baltic Sea. Engraved with mountains and locates many ancient sites. Minor toning on fold, overall very good. (A) $100-130

87-171-1171. Eastern Europe (Tractus Borysthenis, Vulgo Dniepr et Niepr dicti… [Set of three maps]), Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1640. 21 x 15". (FC) Fabulous set of three folio maps that chart the course of the Dnieper River. The maps are in the strip style with two per sheet. This is a very decorative set with some of the nicest, beautifully colored, cartouches and ornamentation we’ve seen. Includes compass roses, battle scenes, livestock and richly costumed gentlemen. Fine original color with some minor oxidation of the green color that fully covers each map. (A) Click on small image at left to view all three maps.   $1100-1300

(FC) This fascinating map details the entire road from London to Hith with details along the route. Includes a city plan of London, cartouche with figures of Neptune and Venus, and a coat of arms. John Ogilby pioneered a series of pictorial road maps of England. Mild toning, couple of light creases, with some acid burn on verso. (B) $475-550

(FC) First edition of this uncommon atlas that Senex issued as an update to Ogilby’s Britannia in miniature form. London at bottom left, with detail of all the important landmarks on the road to New Shoreham on the English Channel. Verso blank. (A) $150-180

(BW) Pocket road atlases on the format introduced by Ogliby, were very popular. Interesting sheet with the title cartouche and the arms of the Colleges in Oxford on one side and a road map from Malmsbury to Bristol (with the arms of Oxford University and Malmsbury) on the verso. Very detailed with roads, canals, market towns, churches, parks, mountains, forests, etc. Each is approximately 11 x 13", overall very good condition, a few with minor light foxing in margins or toning, except map of Middlesex which is trimmed to neatline with some chipping into map. Bound together with tattered, soft paper wraps. (A) $375-450

87-188188. England (The Environs of London), J.H. Colton, New York, 1855. 14.5 x 12". (BW) Detailed city plan and the surrounding countryside. Covers from Stanmore to Chiswell Row in the north, and from Kingston to Chiselhurst in the south. (A) $45-60

189. England (Exact Delineation of the Cities of London and Westminster and the Suburbs…), E. Stanford, London, 1863. 71 x 39". (BW) Incredible, wall map of London and surrounding countryside. The map was originally drawn by Richard Newcourt in 1658. This derivative was the second re-publication, engraved from the original by Edward Stanford, 6 Charing Cross, May 1st 1863. The map is engraved on 12 sheets, joined and back with linen. The entire city is delineated with individual buildings along the streets, and scores of ships and boats in the river. Two inset architectural elevations of St. Pauls and St. Peters Cathedrals. Several coats of arms, a ribbon cartouche and caliper style scale of miles decorate the map. Margins with nail holes where it has been removed from rollers (top and bottom), light damp stain across top, and a couple of small puncture holes, without significant loss. A great wall map, in good condition, considering its size. (B) $600-700

190. England (Map of Yorkshire), Bartholomew, W.H. Smith & Son (publ), London, ca. 1875. 24 x 29.5". (PC) Folding pocket map on linen compiled from the Ordinance and Admiralty Surveys on a scale of 1 inch to a mile. The advertisement describes the map "with Railways up to the latest date. Their particulars are most minute and accurate; and every possible information that a map can give is afforded." Green cloth covered boards with gold embossed title. (A) $40-50

The land is fully engraved with mountains, forests and cities, while the sea is filled with various types of ships, including two engaged in battle. Superb title cartouche, in full original color, with the coat of arms and surrounded by cherubs, men and animals. Additional heraldic cartouche and scale of miles. Professionally repaired split on fold and some light damp stain in margin, overall fine. (A) $475-550

(FC) Finely engraved bird’s-eye view of the city, which is completely encircled by a canal. Very nice depiction of the loading docks for the many cargo ships. Three figures in foreground, strapwork title cartouche and a coat of arms. Tiny hole on fold, else fine with an crisp early impression. (A) $375-425

(OC) Fabulous four sheet copper engraved map with fine original color. Crisp, bright early impression. Horizontal sheets are joined with each measuring 47.5" x 21.5" - the two sets are un-joined, as issued. Above the decorative cartouche is a large (9" x 20") and beautifully rendered battle scene that may be the Battle of Flushing. Filled with energy and movement depicting the English cavalry and artillery bombardment of the Dutch City. Entire map is filled with exquisite detail. An exceptional four sheet map. The cartographic source of the map was Jean de Surhon who received royal privilege to make a map of the region in 1557. Both sources are noted in the cartouches. Nice original color.
