Incredible, wall map of London and surrounding countryside. The map was originally drawn
by Richard Newcourt in 1658. This derivative was the second re-publication, engraved from
the original by Edward Stanford, 6 Charing Cross, May 1st 1863. The map is engraved on 12
sheets, joined and back with linen. The entire city is delineated with individual
buildings along the streets, and scores of ships and boats in the river. Two inset
architectural elevations of St. Pauls and St. Peters Cathedrals. Several coats of arms, a
ribbon cartouche and caliper style scale of miles decorate the map. Margins with nail
holes where it has been removed from rollers (top and bottom), light damp stain across
top, and a couple of small puncture holes, without significant loss. A great wall map, in

cartographic source of the map was Jean de Surhon who received royal privilege to make a
map of the region in 1557. Both sources are noted in the cartouches. Nice original color.
