87-266s)266. Asia (Asiae Descriptio Nova Impensis), Philippi Chetwind, 1666. 16.7 x 13.2". (FC) Uncommon map of the continent and East Indies. The outline of the continent follows the Mercator-Hondius model with a great expanse of water between a truncated Asia and North America. The Korean peninsula is very elongated. Many place names graphically depicting the extent of European knowledge throughout Asia, particularly in the Philippines and East Indies. In the interior of China the Great Wall is depicted, along with an elephant. There is a large island at the end of the Malay peninsula, too large to be Singapore. Strapwork title cartouche and two sailing ships. Professional repair of centerfold, backed with Japanese tissue, remargined at top with facsimile of neatline. (B) $450-500

267. Asia (Accuratissima Totius Asiae Tabula Recens Emendata), F. de Wit, Amsterdam, ca. 1680. 22.5 x 19.5". (FC) Handsome, large map of the continent and East Indies. The extent of European knowledge of the region is vividly depicted, with good detail throughout the south & southeast, reflecting the surveys of the Dutch East India Company, while northern and central Asia is filled mostly with mountains and forests. The work of the Jesuit missionaries are reflected in the well documented region of China. The cartouche has a busy scene including a Jesuit and traders with their exotic cargo. Fine original outline color in map and fully colored cartouche. Minor light foxing, and old repair of bottom 3rd of fold and a horizontal 3 1/2" tear which is well closed. 87-268268. Asia (Asia Qua nulla beatior Ora: Tractus in Eoos vergens Mundique teporem), Valk, Amsterdam, ca. 1710. 23 x 19". (FC) Scarce, large map of the continent and all of the East Indies. The map incorporates Nicolas Witsen’s Siberian cartography, and Hokkaido (here called "Yedso") is still attached to the mainland. The large (uncolored) pictorial cartouche features an oriental courtesan with merchants of many nations presenting gifts. Light toning along centerfold with an old repair in bottom margin, overall very good. (A) $950-1100

87-269269. Asia (Map of Asia Showing its Geopolitical Divisions…), S. Mitchell, New General Atlas, Philadelphia, 1860. 13.2 x 10.5". (FC) Nicely detailed map with good color and decorative floral border. Depicts the various routes of travel (with distances) between London and important points in Asia. Adhesive and paper residue in top margin, just touching the border. (B) $20-30

 

87-270270. Yemen (Aden/Mombaza/Quloa/Cefala), Braun & Hogenberg, Civitates Orbis Terrarum, Cologne, ca. 1595. 18.2 x 13.2". (FC) Fabulous coastal view of the city with numerous ships in the harbor and surrounding sea. The city is surrounded by several hills, each topped by a castle. Below are three separate views of Momabza, Quiloa and Cefala. Fine color and impression. Acid burn on verso, old repair on fold, and some stains in margin, images overall very good. (B) $325-375

87-271271. Near and Middle East (Tabula Asiae IIII), Ruscelli, La Geographgia di Claudio Tolomeo…, Venice, [1599]. 10 x 7.5". (BW) Charming Ptolemaic map of the Holy Land and surrounding regions including Cyprus, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and parts of Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Stipple engraved sea, and in the interior Arabia Deserta there are three Bedouin tents. Ref: Laor #626. Sharp impression (A+) $150-180

87-272272. Near and Middle East (Pars Occidentalis Superior), Lattre, Paris, ca. 1780. 17 x 12". (FC) Detailed map covering from Macedonia through to include the Caspian Sea, and from Egypt through to include most of Iran. Toned with a bit of light foxing, mostly in margins. (B) $50-60

87-273273. Near and Middle East (Lot of 4 maps), J. Cary, London, 1816. 11 x 9". (FC) Set of four maps: Arabia, Syria, Persia, & Turkey in Asia. All very detailed. Age toned with a little light foxing in margins, one with tape residue in margins. All with light coloring and good margins. (A)  One map illustrated at left.   $80-100

87-274-287-274-1274. Middle East (Syria [together with] Modern Palestine), Tallis, The Illustrated Atlas, London, ca. 1850. 9.7 x 12.7". (OC) Pair of steel engraved maps with Tallis’ lovely vignettes and scroll borders. The Syrian map includes all of present day Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, with a bit of Turkey and Cyprus. Vignettes include Jerusalem, a camel caravan and Arab people. Modern Palestine includes all of Israel with southern Beirut and part of Jordan. Vignettes include Nazareth, Jaffa, Natives of Mount Lebanon, a gazelle and pelicans. . (A) $220-25087-275

275. Turkey (Natolia Nuova Tabola), Ruscelli, Venice, [1599]. 10 x 7.2". (BW) Ptolemaic map in the Italian style. Many ancient place names. At center is a small grove of trees and a little snake. Italian text on verso. (A+) $100-120

87-276276. Turkey (Smyrne en de Eylanden Scio en Metelino), Henrick Doncker, Nieuw Groot Stuurmans Straets-Book, Amsterdam, ca. 1670. 20 x 15.5". (BW) Lovely sea chart of the bay of Smyrne complete with an engraved view of the fortified city. Depicts numerous soundings and anchorages. Large strapwork title cartouche, compass rose and rhumb lines. (A) $180-220

87-277277. Holy Land (De Heylige en wyt Vermaerder Stadt Jerusalem, eerst Genaemt Salem), Josua Offermans, 1648. 18.7 x 11.7". (FC) Lovely, colorful bird’s eye view of the ancient walled city in a strapwork border. All the major sites are located and keyed to a table. Similar to the map by Visscher of the same title. Couple of short tears, expertly and invisibly repaired. (A+) $350-400

87-278278. Holy Land (Napthali), Fuller, Pisgah Sight of Palestine, ca. 1650. 13 x 10.7". (BW) Striking copper engraved map of the region of Israel north of the Sea of Galilee to Dan. The map is decorated with cities, forests, armies, figures and two elaborate crests. A very attractive map & sharp impression. A little minor soiling, else fine. (A) $180-200

Holy Land (Israels Pergrination, or the Forty Years Travels of the Children of Israel out of Egypt through the Red Sea, and the Wilderness into Canaan, or The Land of Promise), Moxon, London, ca. 1685. 18.5 x 12.5". (FC) Very decorative map after Visscher. Title cartouche is flanked by two cherubs and a heraldic cartouche with a dedication to James Duke of Ormond and Chancellor of Oxford. Along the bottom are three cartouches depicting Moses, Aaron, religious icons, the ark and the encampment. The map is filled with notations and depictions of events during the journey. Some very minor old creasing, & a professionally repaired tear at bottom, else very fine. (A) $400-475

280. Holy Land (Carte du Voiage des Israelites dans le desert, depuis leur Sortie de l’Egypte jusquau passage du Jourdain), anon., Paris, ca. 1700. 14 x 9". (FC) Appealing map depicting the wanderings of the Children of Israel. The map is surrounded with illustrations including the encampment, religious icons, and the Tabernacle. Minor old crease and toned paper edges, else fine. (A) $150-180

87-281281. Holy Land (Het Heylige Land verdeeld in de Twaals Stammen Israels), Covens & Mortier, Amsterdam, [1700]. 18.5 x 15.7". (FC) Colorful map of present day Israel, Lebanon, Jordan. Fully engraved with mountains, towns, forests & notations on important Biblical sites. Pictorial title cartouche depicting Jesus healing the sick. Distance scale with two scholars. (A+) $375-450

282. Holy Land (A New Map of Palestine or the Holy Land), S. Mitchell, New General Atlas, Philadelphia, 1867. 11.5 x 14". (FC) Nice map of the region with good coloring and a grapevine border. Large inset of Modern Jerusalem. Close margins, as issued. (A) $25-35

87-283283. Northern Asia (A Newe Mape of Tartary), J. Speed, London, 1626. 20 x 15.5". (FC) Carte de figures map of Russia in Asia, Mongolia, an insular Korea, and parts of China. Also depicts Alaska across The Strait of Anian. The map is fully engraved with mountains and forests, the Great Wall of China, numerous towns and fascinating notations. Included in the four views at top is a view of Nova Zembla, the winter quarters of Barents, the Dutch explorer who searched for a northern passage between Russia and America. In the side panels are figures of the people in their native costume. Old repair of split on bottom fold, else very good. (B) $1200-1300

87-284284. Northern Asia (Tartaria), Mercator, Atlas Minor, Amsterdam, [1623]. 7.5 x 5.7". (FC) Charming small map fully engraved with mountains, forests, and towns. Includes part of China with the Great Wall depicted. The Anian Fretium separates Asia from America Pars. Strapwork title and scale of miles cartouches, all in full original color. (A) $180-200

87-285285. China (Pecheli, Xansi, Xantung, Homan, Nanking…), Valk and Schenk, Amsterdam, ca. 1700. 20 x 18". (FC) Based on Mercator’s map of the same title, this decorative map covers northeastern China including Beijing and Shanghai. The Great Wall provides the northern border of the map. The Shantung and Liaotung peninsulas are well formed, and the Huang Ho and Yangtze rivers are correctly located and fairly accurate for the period. Title cartouche surrounded by figures and scale of miles with cherubs and an armillary sphere. Some small worm holes invisibly repaired and fold reinforced. Fine later color. (A) $375-475

87-286286. China (L’Empire de la Chine), Bellin, L’Histoire Generale des Voyages, Paris, 1748. 16 x 11.2". (FC) Delicately engraved map covering central and eastern China, the Korean peninsula, Taiwan, and Hainan. Good detail throughout with a decorative cartouche. The Sea of Japan is called here Mer de Coree. Folding as issued, and now pressed. (A+) $275-350

87-287287. China (Geographical and Historical Map of China), Lavoisne/Gros, Genealogical, Historical, Chronological & Geographical Atlas published by M. Carey & Son., Philadelphia, 1820. 10.5 x 9". (FC) On a folio sheet with extensive English text surrounding the map which includes Formosa, Korea and most of Japan. A very interesting sheet. Tiny bit of toning on fold, else fine. (A) $70-90

87-288288. Japan (William Adams Reystogt na Oost-Indien…), Vander Aa, Leiden, ca. 1729. 11.5 x 8.7". (BW) Scarce map commemorating the landing of William Adams, the first Englishman in Japan. Adams was a pilot for a Dutch ship who arrived in Japan in 1600 and remained for the rest of his life. The pictorial cartouche shows him being received by the Emperor. The map shows the islands of Japan on the Luis Teixeira model and Korea is an island. Exquisitely engraved and framed in an elaborate, picture frame style, border on fine, hand laid paper with very wide margins. (A+)  $1400-1500

87-289289. South Western Asia (Persia sive Soohorum Regnum), Jansson, Amsterdam, ca. 1640. 19.2 x 14.7". (FC) Covers the region from the Black Sea to India with the coastline of the Arabian peninsula. Good detail of hundreds of tiny villages. Beautifully decorated with a sailing ship, a fine title cartouche, and scale of miles, each with figures displaying native costume. Light smudge in image and an old repair in bottom margin, but overall fine. (A) $450-550

87=290290. India and Morocco (Anfa/Azaamurum/Diu/Goa), Braun & Hogenberg, Civitates Orbis Terrarum, Cologne, ca. 1574. 18.5 x 13.5". (FC) Four fine coastal views of these fortified cities, which were important to European trade with Asia. Goa and Diu on the western coast of India, together with Anfa (Casablanc) and Azaamurum on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. This is one of the earliest views of Goa, the main Portuguese trading post in India, and one of only a few Asian views included in the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. The views depict fortifications, buildings, sailing ships (including a sea battle) and scenes of ship building. Fine condition and color. (A+) $550-600

291. Sri Lanka (Taprobana - Insu (Duodecima Asiae Tabula)), Martin Waldseemuller, Geographia, Strassburg, [1513]. 10 x 11". (FC) From this influential edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia, this fine early map pictures the large island in the midst of several smaller islands. Later, appropriate opaque color. (A) $800-1000

87-292292. Southern Asia (Map of Hindoostan, Farther India, China and Tibet), S. Mitchell, New General Atlas, Philadelphia, 1860. 13.7 x 11". (FC) Nice map of the region extending as far as Singapore, which is named. Attractive coloring and a decorative floral border. Minor discoloration in top margin, not affecting map. (A) $25-35

87-293293. South East Asia (Sumatra ein Grosse Insel…Toprobana), Munster/Petri, Cosmograhia, Basle, ca. 1550. 14 x 12". (BW) Very early, scarce map of the island of Sumatra and the southern part of Malaysia. This map is Petri’s revision of the early Ptolemaic map that confused Sumatra with the island of Ceylon. It is one of the earliest maps to focus on this region. Singapore is marked on the tip of Malay peninsula as Cingafufa. Text to the right quotes Pliny, and below is a large engraving of an elephant and his mounted handler (oddly dressed in European clothes). Very fine example of this map, with a good impression, on better than normal paper with only a tiny bit of show-through of the text on verso. Professionally repaired bottom margin. (A+) $675-800

87-294294. South East Asia (Isole Dell India cioe Le Molucche le Filippine e della Sonda…), Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola, 1683. 22.7 x 17.5". (OC) A significant map which was most probably the model for Coronelli and others. The map includes mainland Indochina and Malaysia, and the islands of Indonesia and the Philippines, all with considerable detail. It also shows the coastlines of northern Australia and New Guinea, but with little detail. The large title cartouche (fully colored) is surrounded by figures and sea shells and allegorically represents the riches of the region. Close margins, with top margin trimmed to neatline. It appears to have been cleaned and recently colored (with some color bleed through on verso). There is some paper weakness at edge, reinforced with Japanese tissue. Still an attractive and very uncommon map. (B) $950-1100

87-295295. South East Asia (The Indian Archipelago), Blackie & Son, Edinburgh, ca. 1850. 19.7 x 13.5". (OC) Detailed map of the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia. Shows topography and names even the smallest islands throughout. (A+) $50-70
