history, one carrying an armillary sphere and calipers, and the other displaying a rolled
map. Terrestrial and celestial globes complete the very attractive sheet. Very minor
toning on paper edges, well away from image, which is strongly engraved and beautifully

sheet with extensive title, including several decorative capitals. Inset at bottom is a
map (5.2 x 4") of a northern hemisphere. The map has a banner title and is surrounded
by the sun, moon and stars. It depicts CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND. Also includes the index
sheet for the atlas. Surface soiling , a few short marginal tears, a manuscript ink
notation in margin and one soft crease in text. The engraved map is clean and crisp. (B) Portion illustrated at right.

Mornas, Paris, 1790. 18.5 x 12.5". (BW) Beautifully and fully engraved sheet features
titling within large shell-like cartouche. Surrounded by mapmaking and surveying
equipment, globes & spheres, maps, compass and ship sails and rigging. Fancy border
surrounds and rose bushes draped across the top. Thick hand-laid paper with watermark.
Stains at top corners and top center. (B) $60-70

Ancient World (Altera Generalis Tab. Secundum Ptol.), Munster, Cosmographia,
Basle, ca. 1550. 13.2 x 9.7". (FC) Ptolemaic world map surrounded by clouds and
eleven windheads, with their names in banners. The continents are oddly shaped and all
connected by a great southern continent Terra incognito secundum Protemeum. There
is a very large Taprobana (modern day Sri Lanka) in the Indian Ocean and the Indian
subcontinent is severely truncated. Only the northern part of Africa is shown with the
Nile originating in a mountain range. Ref: Shirley #76. Small hole (with old repair) with
minor loss, else very good. Latin text on verso. (B) $1200-1400
6. World (Typus Orbis Universalis), Munster, Cosmographia,
Basle, ca. 1550-78. 14.7 x 10.2". (FC) Second state of this famous early, woodblock,
map of the "modern" world. Oval projection with surrounding clouds and
windheads, title above the
map. The continents are shown in rough outline only. North America is shown with the large
cleft nearly separating the east coast from the continent, often referred to as the Sea
of Verazano. What appears to be a large NORTHWEST PASSAGE stretches towards Asia.
South America has a very strange shape as well. In Africa, the Nile is prominently shown
with its twin sources beginning in a range of southern mountains. The mythical islands of Grisonum
and Calensuan are placed in the proximity of Australia, where there is also the
label Mare Pacificum. A sailing ship and several fierce sea monsters occupy the
oceans. Initials of the engraver David Kandel in lower left-hand corner and Latin title on
verso. Ref: Shirley #92. Toned paper edges with close (1/8") margins, as is typical
of this map. Couple of tiny wormholes in margin with one affecting neatline, and minor
creases. Overall very good with good, crisp impression and sturdy paper. $2,000 RESERVE.

(Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tableau), Merian, New
Archontologia Cosmica, Frankfort, Germany, ca. 1646. 14 x 9.7". (BW)
Beautifully engraved world map on Mercators projection. The cartography was closely
copied from Blaeus world map of 1606. Latin title at top, outside neatline, with
German script title, and notation concerning the discovering of the Americas in 1492 which
covers the unknown interior of North America. There is a large southern continent
connected to New Guinea, California is a peninsula, and there are plenty of open ended
waterways in the eastern part of North America, which leave open the question of a
Northwest Passage. Two polar projections in lower corners. The map is decorated with sea
monsters, galleons and compass roses. Ref: Shirley 345. Good impression. Ink smudge in
south polar projection, else very fine. (A) $1500-1700

Terrarum Typus de Intergroin Plurimis Emendatus Auctus et Ecunculis Illustratus),
Visscher, Amsterdam, ca. 1660. 18.5 x 12.2". (FC) Exquisitely decorated double
hemisphere world map, surrounded by engravings including allegorical representations of
the continents as well as native inhabitants and wildlife. Two celestial spheres are
displayed in the eastern hemisphere. In the lower part of the western hemisphere is text
describing the discovery of America and recently voyages of discovery. In addition, are
two diagrams depicting the Ptolemaic and Copernican theories of the solar system. The
northwest coast of North America is exaggerated and shows California as a peninsula.
Western Australia, Van Diemens Land and a bit of New Zealand are marked. Ref:
Shirley 414. Professional repair of fold, remargined with neatline in facsimile. Very

Stoopendaal, Dordrecht, [1682]. 18.2 x 14". (FC) Magnificent double hemisphere world
map from a folio Dutch Bible published by Hendrik and Jacob Keur. Surrounded by fabulous
scenes from the Visscher-Berchem map of 1658 with Astronomical diagrams in place of the
north and south polar circles. These classic scenes depict the abduction of Persephone,
Zeus bring carried across the heavens in an eagle-drawn chariot, Poseidon commanding his
entourage, and Demete receiving the fruits of the Earth. CALIFORNIA IS AN ISLAND with a
flat northern coast labeled Nova Albion, and a small island at about where Alaska is
located is labeled Anian. In Asia the Great Wall of China is shown. Western Australia, Van
Diemens Land and New Zealand are shown with incomplete coastlines. Ref: Shirley 513.
Beautiful later color & professionally remargined at both sides with a couple of small

World (A Map of all the Earth and how after the Flood it was Divided among the Sons of
Noah), Moxon, London, ca. 1685. 18 x 12.5". (FC) Second state of this very uncommon,
oval world map. The map is surrounded by vignettes illustrating the Creation, the Garden
of Eden and several Biblical scenes, including Moses receiving the Ten Commandments and
the Crucifixion of Christ. The map itself includes CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND, and partial
coastlines for Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Eden and the Land of Nod are located by
the Euphrates River. Numbers throughout the map are keyed to a listing of various
countries. Two cartouches further decorate the map, including a dedication to Gilbert
Sheldon, Archbishop of Canterbury. Fine impression and color. Ref: Shirley #457. Old

12". (FC) Beautiful double hemisphere from a Dutch Bible. CALIFORNIA IS AN ISLAND,
Australia is partially mapped and there is only a hint of New Zealand. Map is nearly
identical to the next lot, just slightly smaller. Very attractive later coloring. Top
margin was issued narrow (1/8") and has been professionally remargined to accommodate
proper framing. A tiny, nearly invisible tear in bottom margin, just entering image, has
also been professionally repaired. (A+) $1600-1800

(Orbis Terrarum Tabula Recens Emendata et in Lucem Edita), Stoopendaal, Amsterdam,
[1729]. 18 x 13.5". (FC) Based on Visschers bible map of 1663. This is a
stunning double hemisphere world map from a Dutch bible published by Pieter and Jacob
Keur. Surrounded by superb engravings, which include numerous exotic animals and four
female allegorical representations of the continents. At the top and bottom are two
diagrams depicting the Copernican and Ptolemaic theories of the solar system. CALIFORNIA
IS DEPICTED AS AN ISLAND. Australia includes the western and northern coasts and the
discoveries of Van Diemen. The are numerous Pacific islands and much of the eastern
coastline of New Zealand. Ref: Shirley #498. Professionally repaired worm track at bottom
centerfold with perfect facsimile of a couple of letters, else very fine condition and

(FC) Lovely world map on Mercators projection. The northwest coast of North America
stretches directly westward above the ISLAND OF CALIFORNIA. The northeast coastline of
Asia is lacking Kamchatka and Japan is depicted with the Land of Yedso connected to
Iapan. Australia and New Zealand are only partially mapped. Numerous exploration
routes depicted with their respective discoveries. Above the map are two additional double
hemispheres, including one polar projection that flank a title cartouche. Ref: Shirley

Hemispheres), Homann Heirs, Nuremburg, 1746. 21.5 x 18". (OC) Large double hemisphere
world map surrounded by four polar spheres, each in a different projection. Two
interesting diagrams depict the earth as it would be seen from space. North America is
still blank above California, and Hudson Bay is open-ended in the northwest corner. Two
very large, decorative (uncolored) cartouches contain the titles, one in Latin, the other
French. Light printers crease near centerfold. Very clean and sharp, on heavy paper.

11.5". (FC) Double hemispheres show outline of continents and major rivers. West
coast of North America is quite misshapen with two Northwest Passages leading
nearly to the Atlantic and Hudson Bay. Finely engraved on a full sheet of hand laid paper

16.2 x 11.2". (OC) Interesting chart, on Mercators projection. It depicts, by
coloring, the discoveries in the world at the end of the fifteenth century. Those areas
yet to be discovered are left uncolored. Many notations concerning various discoveries
(with dates) throughout. A fascinating look at the history of European exploration. (A)

London, [1848]. 10.5 x 10.5". (OC) This set of untitled maps covers the world. The
first four are on Mercators projection starting with Africa, the Americas, the
Pacific, and Asia. The other two are polar projections. All with great detail and keyboard
style borders. An interesting and attractive set. Includes the title page to the atlas.

(The World on Mercators Projection), Tallis, London, ca. 1851. 10.2 x 14".
(OC) Great map colored to show the British Colonies throughout the world, with the routes
from Britain to each colony colored in blue. Surrounded in a delicately engraved border
with vignettes of Vesuvius, London, Constantinople, Niagara, Gibraltar, The Pyramids of
Ghizeh, and Pont Neuf, Paris. Trimmed into "The" in title at top, as issued and
common for this map, else fine. (A) Illustrated at left.

19. World (Western Hemisphere [together with] Eastern Hemisphere),
J.H. Colton, Coltons Illustrated Cabinet Atlas, N.Y, 1858. 10 x
10.5". (FC) Matching hemispheres on 2 sheets from this rarely seen atlas. Fancy block
titles. Antarctica is just beginning to take shape. Tear at top of Western sheet not
affecting map, but into title. Repaired with archival tape. The pair. (B) $60-80
20. World (The World in Hemispheres), Lloyd, Lampton County
Atlas, New York, [1880]. 12.5 x 9.7". (PC) Unusual and attractive late
1800's map. The hemispheres are surrounded with "Views of the Comparative Heights of
the Principal Mountains, Towns &c, and the Lengths of the Principal Rivers over the
Globe". The mountains and waterfalls are very imaginative. The style is similar to
Mitchells ealier world map. Light marginal foxing, couple of tiny spots in image.

Pole (Nova et Accurata Poli Arctici et Terrarum Circum Iacentium Descriptio), Jansson,
Ansterdam, ca. 1650. 21.7 x 16". (FC) Beautiful map that became the prototype for
north polar projections for many later maps. It depicts rhumb lines radiating from the
North Pole. A large title cartouche, with two figures and numerous wind heads,
conveniently hide the northwest coast of America. The map is further decorated with
several compass roses, ships and an addition cartouche which depict men in parkas, a polar
bear and foxes. Original outline color on map and fully colored decorations.
Professionally repaired splits on centerfold, else very clean and crisp. (A) .

Pole (Hemisphere Spetentrional pour voir plus diftinctement Les Terres
Arctiques
), Delisle/Bauche, Paris, 1782. 18 x 18". (OC) Large north polar
projection covers from the pole to the equator. The map traces the discoveries &
routes of Capt. Cook; and a note about his demise in the Sandwich Islands. Alaska is
beginning to take shape. On a large sheet of hand-laid paper. (A+) $450-550

Cartographic Miscellany (Volvelle), Galluci, Theatro del Mundo ye del Tiempo
Granada, [1614]. 7 x 10". (BW) Copper engraved volvelle, which was used
for finding the position of the moon in the zodiac, given the position of the sun and the
age of the moon. There is an engraved circle with 31 divisions, into which a separate
piece of paper attached with a satin ribbon. This inner piece is marked with twelve
months, and rotates around the circle. An extremely interesting apparatus, more amazing
for the fact that it is still fully functional and in near perfect condition. (A+) Illustrated at right. $75-100

First shows five spheres with latitude, parallel, zenith, etc. Small eastern hemisphere at
center. Second depicts a sphere with the Tropic of Cancer & Capricorn, Equator and
major parallels. Both finely engraved with French text at both sides of a large sheet of
thick, hand laid paper. (A) $50-70

), John Senex,
ca. 1721. 25.7 x 25.2". (FC) Uncommon set of very large, celestial charts of the
northern and southern skies. Based on Flamsteeds famous star catalog, as well as the
work of Dr. Halley and Joseph Harris (who are credited on the charts). The maps include
several new discoveries. English text and diagrams surround the hemispheres. Each
constellation is delicately engraved in the Rococo style. Ref: Warner, The Sky Explored,
p.242-43. Folded, as issued, on heavy thick paper, and now nicely pressed and ready for
framing. Minor professional repair of some fold splits and intersections and one long tear
in the northern hemisphere. Now fine condition with attractive recent color. (A) Illustrated at sides - lighting is unever - charts are fine. $1600-1800

Paris, ca. 1790. 10 x 11.5". Our solar system with six planets; each drawn with
surface detail. Saturn is the farthest out and is surrounded by fully engraved firmament.
The sun has a face with a fully engraved sunburst. An attractive sheet with French text at
both sides. Thick hand laid paper with a circular watermark. (A+) $180-200
