Western Hemisphere (America sive India Nova
), Mercator, Atlantis Pars
Altera, Duisburg, [1606]. 18 x 14.5". (FC) After the death of his
grandfather, Michael Mercator produced this stunning hemispherical map (the only known
printed map attributed to him). It is surrounded by a beautifully engraved floral design
and four roundels, one of which contains the title. The other insets include the Gulf of
Mexico, Cuba, and Haiti. The map was patterned after Rumold Mercators world map of
1587, with a little more added detail. There is a large inland lake in Canada, and the St
Lawrence River extends nearly halfway across the continent with no Great Lakes. There is a
bulge in the west coast of South America. The large southern continent extends above the
Tropic of Capricorn in the Pacific where there is a very large island of New Guinea. Above
North America there are two of the four islands of the North Pole, with the great mythical
rivers flowing from the pole. Ref: Burden #87. Minor repair of centerfold, else very fine.
$4,250 RESERVE (A+) Illustrated above. $5500-6500
31.
Western Hemisphere (America Noviter Delineata), Hondius/Jansson, Atlas Novus,
Amsterdam, ca. 1650. 19.7 x 14.7". (FC) Beautiful map of the Americas derived from
two earlier maps by Blaeu. Two stylized inset maps of the two polar regions. The North
Pole depicts Frobishers theory of the Northwest Passage and the South Pole shows the
long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. The map is richly ornamented with a
strapwork title cartouche, fleets of ships and sea monsters. North America retains the
peninsular California and the east coast is beginning to take shape, although it still
lacks the detail in the mid-Atlantic region. In South America there is a large inland sea
and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. With imprint of
Jansson only, French text verso. Ref. Burden #19 and Goss #27. Attractive original color.
Minor mat burn in wide margins with a couple of repaired tears. Very light, minor
offsetting in map. Overall fine condition. $2,500 RESERVE (A) Hot spots on image are not
on map. $2800-3000
32.
Western Hemisphere (America), Cluver, Cartes de lAncienne Geographie,
ca. 1660. 10.2 x 8.2". (BW) Derived from the Nicolas Visscher map of 1658, with a
similar combination of the Blaeu type Great Lakes region and a Briggs type ISLAND OF
CALIFORNIA. A depiction of the Fries voyage in the sea north of Japan, and Tasmans
discoveries in New Zealand. Engraved by H. Mosting. Drape style title cartouche and a ship
west of California. Ref: Burden #361 and McLaughlin #25. Uncolored except for the place
names which have been underlined in red water color. Damp stain & worm track in
margins well outside map. (A) $400-450
33.
Western Hemisphere (Nieuwe Kaart Van het Weftelykste Deel der Weereld
), Isaac
Tirion, Amsterdam, 1754. 14 x 13.2". (FC) Attractive map of the Americas, which also
includes a good bit of western Europe and Africa. A NORTHWEST PASSAGE is shown through
North America, beginning at the Great Lakes and ending in a large river emptying into the
Pacific at about 50 deg. Latitude. Simple title cartouche and nice compass rose. Nice,
pastel coloring. Crisp impression on a large sheet of quality hand-laid paper with a good
watermark. (A+) $350-400
34. Western Hemisphere (Geographical,
Statistical, and Historical Map of America), Carey & Lea, American Atlas,
Philadelphia, ca. 1822. (FC) Two maps on a folio sheet surrounded by English text. North
America is about 8 x 9" and South America is 7 x 9". Both are well engraved and
nicely colored. In the United States the territories are listed as Michigan, North West,
Missouri, Arkansas, and Florida. Mexico is in control of California and the southwest.
Alaska is not shown. Interesting historical descriptions. Couple of marginal tears, else
clean and very good. (A) $200-250
