Lot 352 - Die Capitein Johann Schmid auff..., de Bry, 1591-1634

 

The following two lots are very early copper engravings from Theodore de Bry’s Grand Voyages. This collection of early voyages (published between 1591 and 1634) are among the first accounts of the New World. They are considered one of the most important of their kind; often the first views of America available to Europeans.

352. Die Capitein Johann Schmid auff…, 6.7 x 5.5". Very crisp impression of the shipwreck of Capt. John Smith off the coast of Virginia. On a full sheet of German text. (A+)  Illustrated above.  $275-325

86-353.jpg (21567 bytes)353. XII, 8.5 x 5.7". Very early engraved scene of Virginia natives making a large canoe. The scene includes them felling trees, burning off the branches, and then burning and scraping out the interior of the tree to fashion the boat. On a full sheet of German text. Trimmed to right edge, as issued, with minor tear in text (repaired with archival tape). Image very crisp and clean. (A) $275-325

Includes William Penn’s Treaty with the Indians, Battle of Bunker’s Hill, Landing of the Pilgrims, Pocahontas’ rescue of John Smith, Signing of the Declaration of Independence and others. One duplicate (The Death of General Wolfe). All very nice engravings in very good to fine condition. (A) $180-200

In 1802 the West Point military academy was established by President Jefferson, making it the oldest of the five national military academies. Four from the survey along the 41st Parallel are superb steel engravings by C. Schumann and F.W. Egloffstein. They include prints of California, Nevada and Utah. The other, a tinted lithograph from the California & Oregon survey, is of Shasta Valley. Included with the prints is a folding sheet with various profiles along the proposed railroad route. Some marginal foxing. (A)  One of the prints is illustrated at right. $100-120

86-365.jpg (15703 bytes)365. Western United States (Lot of six prints), U.S.P.R.R. Surveys, ca. 1854. 9 x 6". All tinted lithographs except one, which is a steel engraving, from various reports. Includes Colorado, Utah and Montana landscapes. Two nice prints of Native Americans, including the Nez Perces, and a Council with White Man’s Horse. Also an interesting scene of the surveyors entertaining a group of Indians at a buffalo barbecue. Some light foxing, mostly in margins. (B) One of the prints is illustrated at left. $120-150

The following etchings and photogravures are from the monumental work, Picturesque California, published by the famous naturalist John Muir in 1888. Muir wanted to share the natural beauty of the West with a wider audience, and employed several famous arts for the project. Each print is either a finely rendered photogravure or an etching. Each measures about 12" x 9", and is on a full 19" x 14" sheet. All have their original tissue guard printed with title, artist, and many include a quote by Muir.86-366.jpg (17896 bytes)

381. Arizona (Grand Canon of Arizona from Hermit Rim Road), Moran, 1912. 36 x 27". (PC) Moran’s famous chromolithograph of the Grand Canyon. The original painting was done in 1912 for the Santa Fe Railroad, who still owns the original oil. This print is in the original frame. The lithograph is faded. At the time, Rock Island was one of the principal railroad centers of the West. It contained a great arsenal, a large armory, a foundry and a military headquarters. The following four lots are hand-colored lithographs by John Gerrard Keulemans from A Monograph of the Nectariidae, published between 1876 and 1880. Each print is approximately 7.5 x 10". Keulemans owned a plantation in West Africa before he returned to Europe and began his highly successful career as an illustrator. His observations of sunbirds, remembered from Africa, combined with his general knowledge of birds, enabled him to render these fine prints.

The following lots are from A History of British Butterflies by F.O. Morris, published in London in 1893. Each are delicately rendered chromolithograhs, hand-finished, often with gum arabic. Each is on a full sheet 7" x 10". At a minimum, each has a side view and top view; both with wings in full view. Other images, as noted below, include the related caterpillar, larvae and other variations in coloring between genders. The butterfly images are generally 1" to 1.5" across.

86-440.jpg (17694 bytes)440. Spanish American War (Capture of El Caney, El Paso & Fortifications of Santiago - Charge of the Rough Riders), Kurz & Allison, Chicago, 1898. 23.7 x 17.5". (PC) Fabulous, colorful, early chromolithograph. This important battle, known as the Charge of San Juan Hill, was one of the most decisive of the war, which led to the capture of Cuba and eventual U.S. victory in the Caribbean. The battle scene includes hand-to-hand combat, a sea battle and a reconnaissance hot-air balloon. The Stars and Stripes flies proudly at the center. Acid burn to verso with some spotting affecting the sky. Paper is a bit brittle, but overall a very attractive print. (C)   Illustrated at right. $200-25086-441.jpg (20362 bytes)

(BW) Charming engraving by this famous engraver, who illustrated many facets of the Renaissance life and dress. A whimsical scene of a young Dutch man and a flock of geese. On a full sheet of Dutch text. (A) Illustrated at left. $40-50

(BW) The title continues "as described by Homer, Iliad 18th in 12 Compartments; with ye Heavens and Earth in the middle, and the Waves of the Ocean round the whole Circumference." It is a very interesting circular engraving. The Zodiac surrounds the center, with twelve scenes around that. The scenes include 3 of pastoral life, 3 of agriculture, 3 of a town in peace and 3 of a town in war. Still bound into September issue of the magazine with related article.
