35. North America (T Noorder Deel van Amerika), Vander Aa,
Leiden, ca. 1707. 12 x 7.7". (BW) Striking map depicting CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND with
an indented northern coast. Terra Esonis stretching due west from the Fretum
Aniani. The Great Lakes are shown still misshapen, with Lake Superior and Lake
Michigan (Lac des Puans) open-ended to the west. There is a fantastic configuration of
Hudson Bay. Title cartouche in upper right corner includes a portrait of Columbus and is
flanked by three explorers. Compass rose decorates the Pacific Ocean. Ref: McLaughlin

North America (A New Map of North America According to the Newest Observations), H.
Moll, John Oldmixons British Empire in America, London, [1708]. 10 x
7". (BW) Scarce copper engraved map with CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND. The British
Colonies are confined east of the Mississippi River with Florida occupying all of the
present southern U.S. Lake Superior is named Upper Lake. Above California is the Straits
of Annian, Mozeemlek Country and Parts Unknown. Lahontans mythical Longue
River stretches between two lakes in the west, with a notation of "Many villages
on the islands" in the western lake. Includes the West Indies and northern South
America. Not listed in McLaughlin. (A+) $475-550

Encylopedia, Paris, 1769. 19 x 11.2". (BW) Depicts North America from
above the Arctic Circle, to the Gulf of Mexico. The most important feature of the map is
the early depiction of what is present day Alaska, patterned after Mullers epic map
of 1750 that was the first to show the Russian discoveries, also noted here. A very
interesting NORTHWEST PASSAGE is shown going from Repulse Bay in the north part of
Hudsons Bay over into the Arctic Ocean at a place called Cape Fowler. Good
detail of Baffins Bay and Hudson Bay. Ref: Wagner (NW) #637 (A+) $250-300

North America (Carte de lAmerique Septentrionale), Bourgoin, Paris, ca. 1770.
16.5 x 13.5". (FC) Very uncommon map by this little known French cartographer.
Depicts the continent and the West Indies with a fair amount of detail except in the west,
which is labeled Quivira. Coastline ends at Nlle Albion. Decorative
title cartouche. Original color in map, with more recent color (with bleed through) on
border and cartouche. Minor toning on fold, else fine. (A)

INDEPENDENT TEXAS, and Russian America. The British America/United States
border in the west is left undetermined, but with a dotted line to the Columbia River,
reflecting the British claims in the region. Mexico controls Nueva California.

provinces shown in each country. Alaska is Russian Possessions. Early western
territorial borders in the U.S. include Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Dakotas,
and Indian Territory. Decorative border and nice color. Split on centerfold, repaired with

12.2 x 15.7". (PC) Large map without centerfold. Depicts the countries within the
continent in bold color. The states and territories of the U.S. are shown with dotted
lines, but the states and provinces or the other countries are not noted. Good
