coloring. Both depict the outline of continents. First shows 24 climate zones plus six
arctic zones on 10" hemisphere. 2nd names glacial, temperate, and torrid zones.
Further details each with full hand coloring. Finely engraved on large sheets of hand laid
paper with French text & tables at sides. (A) $60-80

(OC) One of the most decorative 19th century maps surrounded with steel engraved vignettes
of the people and animals of the hemisphere. The map is colored by continent and the Mail
Route for the British Empire is shown in blue. Very nice impression and condition.

engraving of the continent. Fully engraved with numerous cities and forests. In Russia is
a large tent encampment. Stipple engraved seas and strapwork title cartouche. Map has been
professionally backed with tissue to repair a long centerfold split and strengthen a weak

Hondius, Amsterdam, ca. 1640. 18.5 x 14". (FC) Splendid map of Europe in ancient
times based on the Ortelius map of the same title. Based on classical sources such as
Salustius, Plinius, Herodotus, Strabo and Dionysius. Strapwork title cartouche and scale
of miles, a sailing ship and a sea monster decorate the map. Very attractive original
color. A Little creasing from mis-folding and one minor abrasion, overall fine. (A) Illustrated at right. $500-600

of arms. Scale of miles includes a cherub with a globe and sextant. One stain near

present day Hungary. Includes Wein, Budapest, Belgrade, and Transylvania. The map is
richly embellished with mountain ranges, forests, rivers and cities. Throughout the
landscape are numerous depictions of shepherds with their flocks, and wild game animals.
Strapwork title cartouche and scale of miles. From the Latin edition of 1603, with its

Striking map, fully colored by county and with good detail throughout. A very large,
elaborate title cartouche occupies nearly the entire North Sea. The cartouche includes
numerous figures, a portrait, coat of arms and a Briton slaying a many-headed dragon. The
left corners of the map are further embellished with cherubs, coats of arms and a scale of
miles cartouche. All cartouches are uncolored. Professionally backed with tissue to close
centerfold split and several old tears. Some marginal soiling, else clean and crisp. (B)

cartography, exquisitely engraved by William Hole. The map covers northern Wales,
including present day Snowdonia National Park. Decorations include a large strapwork title
cartouche, compass rose, scale of miles with large calipers and a scene of Neptune
embracing a mermaid in the Caenarton Bay. Early impression on hand-laid paper with a large

(BW) Birds eye view of the medieval city of Brugge. The city is completely
surrounded by walls and a canal with seven bridges into the city. Surrounding farmland
includes several windmills. Two strapwork cartouches, two crests and a couple standing on
a hill overlooking the city embellish the map. Very sharp impression. (A+) $200-250

1720. 39.5 x 24". (OC) Wonderful large map, on two joined sheets, with insets of
Luxembourg, part of France, and a large inset fortification plan. Further decorated with a
large title cartouche. Notation concerning the Treaty for Settling the Barrier in the
Netherlands (1715). Very detailed and interesting. (A) Illustrated at right
- very poor quality lighting; map is fine. $400-450

Belgium and France (Nobilis Hanonlae Comitatus Descript.), Ortelius, Theatrum,
Antwerp, ca. 1579. 20 x 14.7". (FC) Superb, scarce, map of the border region between
France and Belgium. Includes the cities of Mons, Maubeuge, and Valenciennes. The history
of this map is fascinating. It was based on a manuscript map by Jacques Surhon (1548),
which for security reasons was not published. In 1572, Ortelius applied for privilege to
publish the map, but it was never granted. The plate was engraved anyway, and several
