86-325.jpg (31069 bytes)325. Africa (Africa, Libya, Morenlant, met allen Kunigreichen so zu unsern zeiten darin gefunden werden), Munster, Basle, [1544-45]. 13.5 x 10". (BW) First modern map of the continent. German title above the map, with a different title contained in the large cartouche. Ptolemaic geography with large rivers and mountains, and the Nile with its twin lake sources. The map depicts numerous kingdoms and forests (including a grove of trees inhabited by large birds). A strange one-eyed human figure occupies present day Cameroon and a large elephant resides on the southern tip. The map is further decorated with a ship under full sail. Ref: Norwich #2. Minor soil in margins, overall very fine, on good paper. (A) $800-900

326. Africa (Africae nova Tabula), Hondius, Amsterdam, 1631. 19.5 x 14.7". (FC) Richly ornamented map of the continent. Decorative title cartouche surrounded by a wreath and topped with an animal head. There are seven ships under full sail, one of which is firing a cannon. Flying fish and various sea monsters decorate the sea and in the lower left corner Neptune is shown with a lovely mermaid. Elephants, lions, zebras, ostriches and other exotic animals occupy the interior. Cartographically based on the early work of Speed and Blaeu, the map is filled with fictitious rivers and mountains. The origin of the Nile conforms to the Ptolemaic tradition of the two twin lakes. The Kingdom of Monomotapa occupies a large area of southern Africa. Ref: Norwich #34. Lovely original color. 327. Africa, Tegg, The London Encyclopedia, London, [1833]. 10 x 8". (FC) Appealing map of the continent with only detail on the coastlines, and fully engraved oceans. The south central region is marked Unexplored Regions and the Sahara or Great Desert is shown in the north. Lovely coloring and an engraved title block. (A) $50-7086-328.jpg (29816 bytes)

328. Africa (Map of Africa showing its most Recent Discoveries), S. A. Mitchell, New General Atlas, Philadelphia, 1860. 13.4 x 10.6". (FC) Lovely map of the continent with an enlarged, detailed inset of the Island of St. Helena. Nice original coloring and decorative floral borders. Small watercolor mark in lower margin, slightly into the border. (A)  Illustrated at left.   $60-70

86-329.jpg (23821 bytes)329. Northern Africa (Tabula IIII Aphricae), Fries/Servetus, Ptolemy’s Geographia, Lyon, [1535]. 17.5 x 11.7". (BW) Magnificent woodblock map from the blocks of Laurent Fries, the famous physician, astrologer and geographer, and edited by Michael Servetus, the martyr executed by the Calvins in 1553. The Latin text on verso includes a woodcut border and ornamentation attributed to Hans Holbein. Geographically the map is classic Ptolemy, trapezoid in outline with convoluted mountain ranges. The source of the Nile is depicted above the Mons Lune. There is a seated Christian king shown below Ethiopia which is undoubtedly the mythical Prester John. Ref: Norwich #287. Tiny wormhole on centerfold. Some manuscript marginal notations in faded brown ink (with a couple of very faint lines into map). Overall very clean and a great, dark impression. 330. Northern Africa (Lybyae Interioris Pars (Tabula III Aphricae)), Fries/Servetus, Ptolemy’s Geographica, Lyon, [1535]. 18 x 11.7". (BW) This Ptolemaic map covers from eastern Libya to the Red Sea. Numerous towns are shown along the coast and in the Nile valley. Oasis and caravan routes are depicted in the interior. Title in large woodblock letters. Latin text with woodcut borders on verso. Faint ink notation in margin with a line extending into map. Tiny stitch hole on centerfold. Sharp impression except for lower neatlines at both sides. (A) $450-550

(BW) Another Ptolemaic map of the coastal region of present day Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. Latin text on verso with woodcut border and illustration by Hans Holbien. The illustration depicts two armored knights, mounted on mighty steeds, battling with lances (shown at right). Faint brown ink, manuscript notation in margin with one line extending into map. Professional restoration of marginal split, printer’s crease just right of center. Very clean with very wide margins and good impression. (A)  Illustrated above. $500-600

The city is surrounded by countryside with people and camels, and the foreground depicts many boats and ships. A sharp impression of this early view. (FC) Five bird’s eye views of cities on the northern coast of Africa. Each is depicted with ships in the harbors, fortifications, mosques, and buildings. Faint printers crease, else fine with attractive color. (A+) $450-500

(FC) Highly decorative map of Morocco oriented with north on the right. Five sailing ships, including two engaged in battle. The large title cartouche is flanked by two dancing, devil-like creatures. Good detail along the Nile and several oasis are shown. Decorative title cartouche and attractive modern coloring. (A+) Illustrated at right. $100-120

Wells, New Sett of Maps both Ancient and Present Geography, London, ca. 1704. 19.2 x 14.5". (BW) A very decorative map with an odd orientation. The northern coastline is shown top to bottom on the left side of the map, with the coast of Egypt and the course of the Nile shown on the right side with north oriented to top. Dividing the two maps is the very large, title cartouche, with two European figures, the coat of arms of the Duke of Gloucester, and three wild animals. A most unusual and interesting map. 86-337.jpg (19179 bytes)337. Western Africa (Guinea), Jansson, Amsterdam, ca. 1636. 20.5 x 15". (FC) Beautifully engraved map covering the coast from Sierra Leone to Gabon. The land is filed with elephants, lions, leopards and monkeys and the sea is decorated with sailing ships, sea monsters, and compass roses. Further enhancing the map is a very decorative title cartouche flanked by natives and animals. and two strange, child-like, creatures carrying a very large elephant tusk. Professionally repaired tear affecting cartouche, now invisible, else fine. (A) Illustrated at right. $500-600

86-338.jpg (32670 bytes)338. Central Africa (Aethiopia Superior vel Interior vulgo Abissinorum sive PresbiterIoannis Imperium), Merian, ca. 1630. 14.5 x 11.2". (FC) Splendid map of eastern & central Africa. The map depicts the legendary Christian Kingdom of Prester John. Fabled rivers, elephants, ostriches and monkeys fill the otherwise empty spaces of the unexplored interior. Based on an earlier map by Blaeu, there is a fair amount of detail on the eastern coast, reflecting the Portuguese and Arab trading interest. Mogadishu, Mombassa, Quiloa (Kilwa) and Mozambique are shown as major towns. Below the equator there are the two large lakes where the Nile originates. The map is decorated with a title cartouche surrounded by native figures and a decorative scale of miles. Modern color. Close (1/8") margin at left with a repaired tear that extended into the map about one inch, else fine. (A)  Illustrated at left. $550-650

86-339.jpg (33421 bytes)339. Southern Africa (Vtrivsquenili Albi et Atri Fons et Origo ex Veris Relationibus Geograhice Exhibetur), Scherer, Munich, ca. 1700. 13.5 x 9". (BW) Striking copper engraved map. The Nile is prominently featured with its twin tributaries coming out of Lake Zaire and Lake Zaflan to the east. The interior is fully engraved with mountains and forests. Below the title cartouche is a large depiction of the source of the Nile, shown beginning in a large mountain and flowing from two vessels held by a Nigerian and an Egyptian. The map is further embellished with crocodiles, sea monsters and sailing ships. Great impression and condition. (A+)   Illustrated at right. $375-42586-340.jpg (24106 bytes)
