31. Western Hemisphere
(America noviter delineata), Johannes Cloppenburg, Atlas sive Cosmographicae, Amsterdam, [1642]. 10 x 7.2". (BW) First state of this very uncommon map from the reduced size series of the Mercator - Hondius atlas. The cartography is classic Hondius with the inaccurate mid-Atlantic coastline of North America, and the sweeping northwest coastline. The fictitious islands of Frisland and Brasil are located in the north Atlantic. Hudson Bay is left open to the west for the possibility of a northwest passage to Asia. Latin text on verso with page number 19 in top margin. Very crisp impression and decorated with a strapwork cartouche, ships, boats and sea monsters. Barely noticeable stain in lower right (emphasized in photo above) with close margin, nearly to neatline on left, else fine. Burden 224. (A). Illustrated above.  $900-1000

85-032.jpg (35248 bytes)32. Western Hemisphere (Novissima et Accuratissima Septentrionalis ac Meridionalis Americae …), De Wit, Atlas Major, Amsterdam, ca. 1680. 22.5 x 19". (FC) Beautiful large map with CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND. This is the third state of a revised edition of Visscher’s map of 1670. The shape of California was changed to the Sanson model and the cartouches are slightly different. The map contains fascinating details and engravings including a large battle scene in South America and numerous indigenous animals in North America. The Great Lakes are open ended in the west. The R. del Norte shows Santa Fe on its banks, but flows into the sea between the west coast and California. Ref: McLaughlin 49. Professional repair of fold with minor crease and a few light spots in Atlantic, else very good, on strong paper and with lovely original color. (BW) First state of this charming miniature map in a hemispheric projection. CALIFORNIA DEPICTED AS AN ISLAND on the Briggs model, with a flat northern coast. The Solomon islands dominate the Pacific and part of the New Zealand coast is shown, but not named. Three galleons decorate the map. Ref: McLaughlin 84-1. Expert, nearly invisible, repair of tear, which extended into title above map. Fine, sharp impression. (A)  Click image for full size.    $275-325

(OC) Attractive small map depicting CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND with an indented northern coast and numerous place names. Large title cartouche surrounded by several native and European figures. 85-035.jpg (50208 bytes)35. Western Hemisphere (A New and Accurate Map of America…), Emanuel Bowen, John Harris’ Navigatium…Voyages and Travels, London, [1744-48]. 17.5 x 13.7". (BW) Detailed copper engraving. The river systems of both continents are well depicted. California is correctly shown as a peninsula & the northwest coast is devoid of detail with the notations Parts Undiscovered and the supposed Straits of Annian. Directions of tradewinds are shown in the oceans and newly discovered islands are noted across the Pacific. Title cartouche depicts natives and a European landing party, and two compass roses decorate the map. Crisp impression. (A+)  Click image for full size. $325-375

Considerable detail even in the interiors. There is no coastline above the peninsular California. Full color denoting European possessions. Very large, colored, cartouche with two erupting volcanoes, native Americans, birds and what appears to be a pot of gold. Light impression in cartouche, else fine with attractive color. (BW) Crisp, bright impression on fine hand-laid paper. Simple cartouche, compass rose in ocean. Includes the west coast of Africa and much of western Europe. Shows a NORTHWEST PASSAGE through North America, beginning at the Great Lakes and ending in a large river emptying into the Pacific at about 50° Latitude. (A)  Click image for full size$300-350

85-038.jpg (48748 bytes)38. Western Hemisphere (L’Amerique Dressee pour l’etude de la Geographie…), Brion de la Tour, Desnos, Paris, 1790. 10.2 x 9". (OC) Lovely and geographically interesting map. The western coast of North America has a strange shape, with an unusual indentation above the elongated California at Cape Mendocino, with Nelle Albion above and a dotted coastline above that. A NORTHWEST PASSAGE is shown in a network of lakes and rivers between the Great Lakes and the Straits of Juan de Fuca. Depicts the British Colonies (Nelle Angleterre and Floride) confined east of Louisianne and a odd shaped Nelle Mexique above Nelle Espagne. Numerous sailing ships in both oceans and a pictorial title cartouche. Panels of French text pasted at sides, as issued. Original outline coloring, light impression of sailing ships, else fine. Western Hemisphere (America North and South and the West Indies; with the Atlantic Aethiopic and Pacific Oceans wherein are Distinguished All the Discoveries lately made by the English and the Spaniards), Samuel Dunn, Laurie & Whittle (publ), London, 1794. 17.2 x 12". (FC) Recently discovered islands in the Atlantic and Pacific with notations of their discoverer and date. New Zealand is fully shown. Alaska is still a bit mis-shapen. In northwestern North America are two rivers River of the West and Tortolas R. depicted with dotted lines as possible northwest passages. Crisp engraving and original color. 40. Western Hemisphere (Carte Geographique, Statistique et Historique de l’Amerique), Buchon, Paris, [1825]. 14.7 x 8.2". (FC) Two maps, North America and South America, on a large folio sheet surrounded by French text. Beautifully engraved and colored. The United States is shown with the British claims into the Northwest down to the Columbia River. The states and organized territories are depicted with dotted lines (with a large Arkansas Territory). Mexico is in control of Texas and present-day southwestern U.S. Alaska is not fully shown and is a Russian possession. Very clean and crisp. Worm track along fold (in the Atlantic Ocean, with no loss of engraved line) - archivally repaired. (A) $220-250

41. Western Hemisphere (Amerika Historisch, Physisch und Politisch), J. Velten, 1828. 26 x 19.2". (FC) Interesting and unusual copper engraved map on a large sheet of German text. There are numerous notations throughout the map. The route of Columbus is depicted in yellow, Picarro’s voyage to Peru is shown in red and the explorations of Lewis and Clark are noted in red. (A+) $130-160

42. Western Hemisphere (Colonies Francaise. (en Amerique)), Victor Levasseur, Atlas National Illustre, Paris, [1849]. 17 x 11". (OC) Very detailed and finely engraved sheet with four maps surrounded by beautifully rendered engraved scenes. Depicts the French colonies in the Americas including Newfoundland; Saint Martin, Anguille, Seal, St. Barthelemy; French Guyana; and St. Pierre and Miquelon Islands. Strong, crisp impression with bright outline color and delicate blue wash in the seas. Full margins, with a few marginal spots. (A) $100-140

(FC) Highly detailed steel engraving with pleasant coloring. The western half is nearly blank, but Santa Fe is named. Hand coloring is used to denote land held by controlling nation. Lightly toned at edges with one tear in margin only. (B)  Click image for full size. $120-150
