sive Cosmographicae, Amsterdam, [1642]. 10 x 7.2". (BW) First state of this very
uncommon map from the reduced size series of the Mercator - Hondius atlas. The cartography
is classic Hondius with the inaccurate mid-Atlantic coastline of North America, and the
sweeping northwest coastline. The fictitious islands of Frisland and Brasil are located in
the north Atlantic. Hudson Bay is left open to the west for the possibility of a northwest
passage to Asia. Latin text on verso with page number 19 in top margin. Very crisp
impression and decorated with a strapwork cartouche, ships, boats and sea monsters. Barely
noticeable stain in lower right (emphasized in photo above) with close margin, nearly to
neatline on left, else fine. Burden 224. (A). Illustrated
above. $900-1000
32. Western Hemisphere (Novissima et Accuratissima Septentrionalis
ac Meridionalis Americae
), De Wit, Atlas Major, Amsterdam, ca. 1680.
22.5 x 19". (FC) Beautiful large map with CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND. This is the third
state of a revised edition of Visschers map of 1670. The shape of California was
changed to the Sanson model and the cartouches are slightly different. The map contains
fascinating details and engravings including a large battle scene in South America and
numerous indigenous animals in North America. The Great Lakes are open ended in the west.
The R. del Norte shows Santa Fe on its banks, but flows into the sea between the
west coast and California. Ref: McLaughlin 49. Professional repair of fold with minor
crease and a few light spots in Atlantic, else very good, on strong paper and with lovely
original color. (A) $1,800 RESERVE. Click

model, with a flat northern coast. The Solomon islands dominate the Pacific and part of
the New Zealand coast is shown, but not named. Three galleons decorate the map. Ref:

Western Hemisphere (A New and Accurate Map of America
), Emanuel Bowen, John
Harris Navigatium

13.7". (BW) Detailed copper engraving. The river systems of both continents are well
depicted. California is correctly shown as a peninsula & the northwest coast is devoid

Albion above and a dotted coastline above that. A NORTHWEST PASSAGE is shown in a
network of lakes and rivers between the Great Lakes and the Straits of Juan de Fuca.
