369. Pacific (Carte du Grand Ocean ou Mer du Sud), La Perouse, Atlas
du Voyage de La Perouse, Paris, 1797. 27 x 19.5". (BW) Jean-Francois de
Galaup, Comte de La Perouse commanded a French scientific expedition to the Pacific in
1785-88. Recognized as one the foremost naval commanders and navigators in France, he was
selected by King Louis
XVI to complete Captain James Cooks exploration of the western Pacific. La Perouse
explored the coasts of the Gulf of Alaska and northwestern North America in search of the
fabled Northwest Passage. After leaving America his expedition continued on to Asia where
he explored from Macao to Kamchatka and the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. His
expedition vanished shortly after leaving Botany Bay, Australia, in 1788. Great detail of
the island groups explored. The map includes all of North America, most of South America
and the eastern coast of Asia. Australia is shown, with its southern coast unexplored, and
there are bits of the New Zealand and New Guinea coastlines still blank. Japanese tissue

Boston, ca. 1835. 10 x 8". (OC) Extends to include Borneo and Indonesia, Japan and
much of North and South America. Australia has only three cities mentioned and none in New
Zealand. One set of islands is labelled the Dangerous Archipelago. Lightly toned.

1840. 8.5 x 10". (BW) Nice copper engraved map of the island with good detail of
coastline and the interior beginning to fill in. On thick, linen-backed paper. Scattered

1860. 12.5 x 9.7". (OC) Steel engraved map colored by county, as well as indicating Gold
Diggings. Uncolored vignettes of Aborigines, a kangaroo, and River Glenelg, Victoria
and surrounded in a decorative border. (A) Illustrated at

map with outline coloring of counties, as well as the numerous Gold Diggings.
Uncolored vignettes of the Seal of New South Wales, Sydney Cove, The Murray and a plant
called Xanthorrhaea. All surrounded by a delicately engraved, decorative border. Tiny spot
