216. Atlantic (Cape de Verde Islands), Charles Wilson, London, 1867. 35 x 28". (BW) Sea chart with blue backing paper and linen edges. With insets of Mordiera Bay, Tarrafal Bay, Porte Grande (St. Vincent), Porto Praya, and English Road. Eight sea views from various angles cover Sal and Mayo islands. Compass rose gives true north with magnetic variation given for 1865 with note that it is changing +3’ per year. Spotting at bottom. (B) $100-150

(BW) Crisp, dark impression on hand-laid paper with a decorative cartouche. Interesting depiction of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Shows major cities, rivers and mountains. 218. Eastern Hemisphere (Untitled), Anon., ca. 1774. 7.7 x 10". (BW) Simple, outline chart of Africa, Europe and part of Asia. Shows the track of Bougainville from St. Malo in France, around Africa, and continuing east to well beyond Madagascar. On thick, hand-laid paper. Folds and close margin at binding fold, as issued. Scattered foxing. Reported to have come from a 1774 Gentleman’s Magazine, but not listed in Jolley. (C) $30-50

(BW) Simple map with the land surface engraved with forests and the ancient regional names. Strapwork title cartouche with partial handcolor. Some place names underlined in red water color. The partial coloring on the map is old and probably the work of a previous owner, when it was a common gentleman’s hobby. Impression is a little light, else very good. Extends from the Netherlands south to Normandie. Crisp impression and good color on full sheet (20.5 x 13.3") of hand-laid paper. French text panels at sides, pasted on as issued. 227. Central Europe (Central Europe Showing the Principle Railways, and the Political Boundaries), Blackie & Son, Edinburgh, ca. 1860. 19.5 x 13.5". (PC) Includes northern France with Paris, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, the Germany Empire and part of Poland and Austria. Very good detail of railroads. (A+) $25-40

Eastern Europe (Sarmatia Europe [together with] Sarmatia et Scythia, Russia et Tartaria Europae), (BW) Two maps covering the same region of eastern Europe from eastern Poland through Yugoslavia eastward to the Ural Mtns. First is a large (18.5 x 11.5") woodblock Ptolemaic map from an edition by Fries published between 1522 and 1535. Illustration of a Russian emperor in the upper right corner of the map. Latin text and elaborate illustrations on verso attributed to the artist Han Holbein, the younger. Strong impression & fine condition. Second map is a copper engraved map, which also includes Finland and part of Sweden. Small decorative title cartouche. This map measures 9.2 x 10.2" and was published by Cluvier in circa 1690. Trimmed close for binding with short binding tear (repaired with archival tape). Both archivally mounted with attractive mats. A great pair of maps illustrating two cartographic periods.  Sarmatia Europe illustrated at left, Sarmatia et Scythia...at right. Click images for full size$700-800

230. Eastern Europe (Dealer’s Lot), ca. 1700’s. 9 x 7". (BW) Lot of nine maps, all about the same size. Covering the region of present day Poland and Lithuania. Includes 4 maps from various London magazines. Ref: Jolly LOND-128, SCOT-43, GENT-106 and LOND-238. Also two by Thomas Kitchen, one by A. Bell and two others. All with good detail. Average condition with some toning, two with offsetting. (B) $200-250

233. Eastern Europe (A Map of Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Lussatia, with great part of Saxony & Brandenburg Shewing the Present seat of War,), Gentleman’s Mag., 1756. 10 x 14.2". (BW) Detailed map of the region with milage chart and decorative cartouche. A very interesting chart, in that it shows the milage between points much like a modern road map. Precisely engraved map on thick, hand-laid paper. With large inset Plan of the Country where the Prussian Army gained a Victory over the Austrians, Oct. 1.1756. Ref: Jolley GENT-100. (B) $45-60

234. Eastern Europe (A Map of the present Seat of War between the Russians, Poles, and Turks), Anon., ca. 1770. 14 x 10". (BW) Very detailed engraved map of the region from Poland (Volhinia) to Russia east to the Walga River. Centered on the Black Sea in lower half. Terrific detail shows walled cities, hundreds of villages, rivers, etc. Cartouche with sea creatures, and a lion holding a flag. Hand-laid paper with beautiful circular watermark. A few splits and offsetting. (C) $35-50

236. Britain (Veteris et Nova Britanniae Descriptio), Philippe Cluver, Cartes de l’Ancienne Geographie, ca. 1660. 10.2 x 8.5". Copper engraved map with ancient place names. Inset of northern Scotland within strapwork border. Strapwork title cartouche and scale of miles and a nice compass rose. Map has been partially hand-colored in an amateur hand. Needs cleaning and recoloring, else in very good condition. (C) $40-60

Legend identifies counties: England names 40, Wales has 12, Ireland 32, and Scotland with 32. Each county is identified on the map by number. Even age toning, light color. 85-240.jpg (50244 bytes)240. England (The Roads from Chelmsford in Essex to Maldon, Raleigh in Essex and Gravesend in Kent), Ogilby, Brittania, London, [1675]. 16.5 x 13". (FC) Ogilby pioneered a series of pictorial road maps of England. He designed them in strips radiating from London along the main post roads. This map details the roads east of London with fascinating details including milestones, houses, bridges and topography. Large title cartouche surrounded by Neptune and Venus and a coat of arms. Minor abrasion on fold & a tiny worm hole, else very good with fine, old color. (A)   Click image for full size. . $500-550

Lots 241-246 are from Britannica Depicta or Ogilby Improved, published by Owen and Bowen in London, circa 1720. Each measures approximately 5 x 7" with maps on both sides. They are delicately engraved with incredible detail including buildings, bridges and other milestones. Included are full county maps and strip-type road maps decorated with compass roses and coats of arms.

Very impressive engraving with over 250 ships. Below the title is a key with the captain’s names (most appear to be Dutch) for each of the flag ships. A little creased on fold, and margin torn to within 1/8" of neatline bottom corner, else very good. (A) $60-90

(BW) Good detail of major roads, existing and under construction. Prominently features the London Bridge, also Vauxhall Bridge, The Tower, Sr. Thos. Waterings, Ketleby’s Rents, Spring Garden, etc. Decorative cartouche, compass rose with north at bottom. Ref: Jolly GENT-79. Small area of loss in margin and additional soft crease in map. Twelve county maps including 5 of Rutlandshire, 4 of Huntingdonshire, Monmouthshire, Stafforshire, and a Saxton/Lea of Northhampton, Bedford, Huntington and Rutland. Dates range, but mostly 18th and early 19th century, including Morden, Carey, Fullerton, etc. Condition varies with some light foxing and old repairs, but overall good. Exception being the Saxton/Lea which is still attractive but poor condition. Not subject to return.   Click image for full size$200-250

Paper label further describes the map Including the Counties of Middlesex and Surrey; Nearly the Whole of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, and Kent: With very considerable Portions of Sussex, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire & Oxfordshire; and Part of Suffolk. Folds into marble-paper covered slipcase with paper label. Map is overall toned with a couple of small chips in border. Linen has a couple of short splits and slipcase is torn. Covers the region from Kenton to Barking Side to the north of London and from Kingston to Chislehurst in the south. Emphasis on streets, parks, railways and the underground. Folds into cloth covered boards with 32pp index. Old tape repair of index, a few pencil marks of a previous owner and slight damp stain on cover corner, overall very good. (B) $35-50

(FC) Dissected and linen-backed folding map with mail coach roads clearly shown. Inset of the Shetland Islands. Beautifully colored with a compass rose. Folds into marble-paper covered slipcase with paper label. Price in ink on cover label, and light offsetting of title in map, else fine. (A) $150-200

(FC) Detailed map on a folio sheet with surrounding English text describing the country. Included is an interesting notation concerning Second Sight, a faculty, or gift, once supposed to reside among the Highlanders. Inset of Shetland Isles. Strong, original color. (BW) Beautifully engraved map of the region with Angers near center. Wonderful detail of the mountains, forests, castles and bridges. Cartographical source is from a map by Lezin Guyet published in 1573 and now lost. Large strapwork title cartouche, additional cartouche containing the date, and a mythical creature atop the scale of miles; all enclosed in a very decorative border. 85-271.jpg (55236 bytes)271. France (Caletensium et Bononiensium Ditionis Accorate Delineatio [with] Veromanduorum Eorumque Confinium Exacissima Descript.), Ortelius, Antwerp, ca. 1585. 19 x 12.2". (FC) Two maps on a folio sheet. Calentensium covers the coastline between Calais and Estaples in excellent detail, based in part on a four-sheet map by Nicolas de Nicolay. Veromanduorum covers a small region surrounding Saint-Quentin in northern France. The cartographical source of the map was Jean de Surhon who received royal privilege to make a map of the region in 1557. Both sources are noted in the cartouches. Each is covered with tiny forests and cities and has a decorative title cartouche. Contemporary color which includes the decorative capitals of the text on verso. A couple of tiny light spots. Nicely engraved with mountains, forests, villages, a large fortified wall, mountain-top castles and the Turkish fleet in the sea. (FC) Stunning map of the classical region of Thrace, encompassing the southern Balkans from the Sea of Marmara to the Bosphorus with most of present-day Bulgaria and Romania up the western shore of the Black Sea to the mouth of the Danube River. Ortelius based the map, in part, on the work of Jacob Gastaldi. Beautifully decorated with an elaborate title cartouches, ships and sea monsters and very fine coloring. (BW) Pair of great battle plans of the Austro-Turkish War. First depicts the Austrians besieging the Turkish at Belgrade. Numerous ships are in the Donau River, and the armies and batteries are depicted together with a key in German text. A very interesting and graphic plan. Misfolded with a crease and margin tear within 1/8" of neatline at one corner, else clean and crisp. Second depicts a grand battle on the banks of the Tisza River near Senta. The Austrian army has encircled the Turks and are pushing them back across the river. The foreground is engraved to show the fleeing army. Light impression, else fine.
