318. Asia
(L’Asie), Sanson/du Sauzet, Atlas portatif, Amsterdam, [1734-8]. 10 x 7.2". (FC) Attractive map of the continent and the East Indies based on the Sanson map of 1652. Japan is one large island, based on Jesuit sources. There is a huge land mass to the north of Japan which is named here Terre de Iesso, Yezo ou Sesso, a Jesuit name for Hokkaido, and is an exaggeration of the Dutch discoveries of de Vries. Korea is depicted as an island. This map is a scarce, pirated Dutch edition, which was engraved by Anthony d’Winter and first published in 1683. Winter extended the map 10 degrees further east and improved Sanson’s delineation of New Guinea, identified here as the Terre de Papous. Minor foxing in margins. (A)  Illustrated above.   $300-350

(OC) Covers all of Asia from Constantinople and Arabia to the tip of the Aleutians, and south to include the Philippines, Borneo and Sumatra. (FC) Intriguing map of the region between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf with Paradise, depicted to the east of Babylon. Two engravings; Adam and Eve with the serpent, and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Further decorated with compass rose, scale of miles cartouche and a depiction of Jonas and the whale. (OC) Covers Asia Minor through to the Caspian Sea and from Egypt to Iran. Decorative title cartouche covers most of the Arabian peninsula. (A) $80-100

324. Near & Middle East (Caucasian Countries and Turkey in Asia), T.G. Bradford, Comprehensive Atlas, Boston, ca. 1835. 10 x 8". (OC) Includes Constantinople, the Black Sea, the Sea of Azof, and the eastern half of the Mediterranean. Good detail of mountains, rivers and major cities. Extends east to show part of the Caspian Sea. Names all regions within Turkey. Lightly toned . (B) $20-40

(BW) Bird’s-eye plan with terrific detail down to individual trees, plowed fields, and buildings. Extensive keyed legend identifies 75 places and buildings on the plan. (BW) Panoramic, woodblock view of Jerusalem (as seen from the east), possibly drawn after Sebastian Munster’s 1550 view. Below the print, and on verso, is an interesting description of the city in French text. Fine impression, trimmed to neatlines on both sides, as issued. (FC) Lavishly decorated map of the Holy Land which depicts the flight from Egypt. Includes a title cartouche, several fine engravings of religious icons, numerous sailing ships and a charming scene of Jonas and the whale. Minor extra crease near fold, else fine. (FC) Lovely, colorful, bird’s eye view of the ancient walled city, with a key enclosed in a strapwork border locating all the major sites. Similar to the map by Visscher of the same title. (OC) Magnificent Dutch Bible map of the Holy Land divided into the twelve Tribes of Israel and depicting the Exodus from Egypt and the wanderings of the Children of Israel. The lower part of the map is elaborately engraved with a scene of the encampment and Moses receiving the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai. The map is further decorated with a title cartouche flanked by Adam, Eve, Kane and Able, a convoy of ships bringing cedar for the building of Solomon’s Temple, and Jonas & the whale, all in full color. (FC) Fabulous coastal view of the city with numerous ships in the harbor and surrounding sea. The city is surrounded by several hills, each topped by a castle. Below are three separate views of Momabza, Quiloa and Cefala. Fine color and impression. Professonially repaired tear in margin and small abrasion to neatline, else fine. (BW) Woodblock, Ptolemaic map of the region with many ancient place names including two cities named Alexandria. Elaborate woodblock illustration on verso with Latin text (minor show through to map). Southern Asia (Chart of the Coast of Persia, Malabar &c. from the French Chart Publish’d by Order of the Count de Maurepas), Thomas Kitchen, London Magazine, London, [1770]. 7.2 x 9". (BW) Engaging cartouche with ruins and cannon, and a compass rose. Shows the coastline from eastern Persia, west to southwestern India, and includes the Maldives. Many place names. Ref: Jolly LOND-287. Close and ragged trim at bottom, just affecting neatline at one point, else fine. (B)  Click image for full size. $30-50

85-337.jpg (86322 bytes)337. Russia (Russiae, Moscoviae et Tartariae Descriptio), Ortelius, Antwerp, ca. 1570. 17.2 x 13.7". (FC) Fascinating map of Russia and the former Soviet republics. From the surveys of the English merchant and adventurer, Anthony Jenkinson in 1562. Jenkinson was leader of the Muscovy Company’s first expedition to Russia and the first European to travel widely throughout the region. Ortelius’ map replicates much of the detail and decoration of the original Jenkinson map, with illustrations of Cosacks, camels, encampments, armies and a curious burial scene where the dead are hung from trees, complete with extensive notations. A vignette of Ivan the Terrible appears top left. Latin text on verso. Scale - 1:12,000,000. Water and worm damage in margins, else very good. (B)  Click image for full size$800-900

Russia and Alaska (A Map of Cap’t Beerings’ Travel from Tobolskoy to Kamchatka between ye years 1725-1730), Du Halde, A Description of the Empire of China and Chinese Tartary, London, [1738-41]. 20.2 x 8.2". (BW) Fine copper engraved map of a region rarely mapped; depicting the discoveries of Capt. Vitus Bering in 1725-28. This important map is the first printed English map to show any part of ALASKA, St. Lawrence Island. Large title cartouche with two fur-clad men, armed with bow and arrow, together with a caribou in a winter landscape, and two windheads blowing up a snowstorm. Folding as issued. Minor surface soil. 339. Russia (Partie Orientale de l’Empire de Russie en Asie… et les Confins de la Tatarie Chinoise), R. de Vaugondy, c.1750. 23 x 18.2". (OC) Large map with mostly topographical detail of mountains, deserts, rivers and forests. Covers the region from Tomsk eastward and includes Sakhalin. Uncolored, decorative title cartouche. A tiny bit of foxing in the wide margins. (A) $80-100

(FC) Beautiful map of central China depicting the Yangtze and Yuan rivers, where they flow into the Tungt’ing Lake. Chongqing, Changsha and Wuhan are all shown. Large decorative title cartouche flanked by farmers and bamboo. Published in the first western atlas of China by Martino Martini. Barely noticeable damp stain, else clean and very good paper. Includes Plan of the City of Peking (2 copies); Map of the Proposed Route to China from British Burmah; and Map of North-east China, showing the Gulf of Pechili, the Tien-Tsin (Peiho) River, and the Approaches to Pekin. (A) $30-50

342. China, Japan &c. T.G. Bradford, Comprehensive Atlas, Boston, ca. 1835. 10 x 8". (OC) Good detail of the region. North of China is Mongolia and Mantchooria. Japan extends to include Jesso. Toned. (B) $40-50

343. India (Hindostan), T.G. Bradford, Comprehensive Atlas, Boston, ca. 1835. 8 x 10". (OC) Good impression and detail. Includes Ceylon and extends into part of Burmah. Toned and the color is a little weak. (B) $20-30

Stipple engraved sea, in the Italian style. Decorated with a strapwork title cartouche and compass rose. On a full sheet of Italian text, which is very decorative. Minor foxing in margins, map extremely fine. (A+) Illustrated at left. $150-200

Cartouche with figures and the map is enclosed in a large elaborate, picture frame style, engraved border. Later color with a bit of bleed through. Interesting sheet with three maps; two of the respective islands and another is a plan of the fort complete with canon. Two compass roses and several interesting engravings of native life. 85-348.jpg (34608 bytes)348. Indonesia (Moluccae Insulae Celberrimae), Blaeu, Theatre de Monde…, Amsterdam, ca. 1630. 19.2 x 14.7". (FC) Exquisite map of the famous "Spice Islands". Blaeu’s map was the first large scale map of the region and depicts the islands that provided, first the Portuguese and then the Dutch, with a monopoly on the lucrative spice trade. Very decorative title cartouche and a cartouche enclosing a map of Bachian Island. Other decorations includes 2 compass roses, various types of sailing ships, and sea monsters. Slightly faded original color, margins trimmed but still very wide with some acid burn in margins, else very good. (B) $600-650

(BW) Charming, copper engraved map of the region from India to the Philippines and south to include all of Indonesia. There are no place names in China, north of Canton.
