85-353.jpg (36437 bytes)353. Africa (Nova Descriptio Africae), Merian, Frankfurt, ca. 1630. 13.7 x 10.5". (FC) Small decorative map copied from Blaeu. Merian’s precise engraving style. The map is decorated with a title cartouche, ships and numerous sea creatures (including one with a horsehead and fishtail). Inland are numerous animals including elephants, monkeys and lions. The Nile is depicted according to Ptolemy with its sources in two large lakes. Ref: Norwich 42. Appears to have been cleaned with margins at both sides added (with left neatline in facsimile) and new color. (A)  Click image for full size. $450-500

354. Africa (Afrique), N. Sanson, Paris, 1650. 21.5 x 15.2". (OC) Copper engraved map with Sanson’s typical detail. Includes the Canary and Cape Verde Islands as well as several other Atlantic islands and the coastline of Brazil. Also includes Madagascar and many islands in the Indian Ocean. Uncolored, wreath style, title cartouche. Light scattered foxing. (B) $150-170

355. Africa (Africa Selon les Autheurs les plus Modernes), de la Feuille, Amsterdam, ca. 1710. 8 x 5.5". (FC) Attractive map of the continent flanked by the coats of arms of each of the major nations. Title cartouche with figures and native inhabitants. Little interior detail. Acid burn from old mat and some browning on folds. (B)  Illustrated above. $100-120

Dark, crisp impression on hand-laid paper. Compass rose. Good detail throughout. Locates many regions including Negroland. Toned with some offsetting: needs cleaning. 357. Africa (l’Afrique), de Vaugondy, Nouvel Atlas Portatif, Paris, 1778. 11 x 9.5". (OC) Clearly engraved, with delicate coloring, decorative cartouche and two distance scales. Much of the interior is blank with no topographical detail at all. Includes Madagascar. On a full sheet of hand-laid paper with wide margins. Small area of blue watercolor at the far left well away from the continent. (B) $100-120

358. Africa (L’Africa divisa ne suoi Principali Stati), Zatta, Atlante Novissiomo, Venice, 1796. 15.5 x 11.7". (OC) Handsome copper engraved map of the continent based on a map by Jean Janvier. Interesting detail throughout the map. The Nile river is shown originating in two small lakes in the Monti della Luna. C. de Bonne Esperance and Stellembos Pic are the only settlements marked in southern Africa. A few Hottentot tribes are shown. Cafrerie is a large interior region in the south, but is further north than the area later call Kaffraria. The fully colored, title cartouche includes a river, trees, a large flying bird and a leopard. Ref: Norwich 99. Couple of water spots in oceans, else very good. (B) $325-375

85-359.jpg (13554 bytes)359. Africa, T.G. Bradford, Comprehensive Atlas, Boston, ca. 1835. 10 x 8". (OC) Attractive map of the continent with the middle portion blank, and labeled Ethiopia or Unexplored Regions. Good impression. Lightly age toned. (B) $40-60

360. Morocco (Marocchi Regnum), Mercator, Atlas Minor, Amsterdam, [1623]. 7.2 x 6". (FC) Very attractive, small map with a large strapwork, cartouche on which two birds are perched. Mountain, cities and forest fill the land. Beautiful original color which is very rare for maps from this atlas. Latin text on verso, together with another text page containg a complete description of the map. (A) $150-170

(BW) Decorative border, simple compass rose. Crisp impression with good detail. Includes the Kingdoms of Tafilet, Tuath, Sagelmese, and Algiers. Ref: Jolly LOND-181. Close trimmed at bottom. (A) Illustrated. $25-35

Egypt (Map of Egypt, Drawn from the Latest Authorities, and intended To illustrate the Military Operations of General Buonaparte), Anon., Monthly Magazine, London, 1798. 11.3 x 18.5". (BW) Oval cartouche with script and fancy tilting. Names hundreds of places along the Nile. Legend lists ancient to modern place names as nearly as possible. Filled with notations, desert trails, etc. Eight distance scales. An extraordinary map to have been published in a magazine. Ref: Jolly MONMAG-3. A little toned along one fold with reinforcing on back. (B)   Click image for full size. $180-200

363. Egypt, T.G. Bradford, Comprehensive Atlas, Boston, ca. 1835. 8 x 10". (OC) Map focuses on the Nile river and its many town and villages. Extends to Gaza and south to Foul Bay on the Red Sea. Lightly age toned. (B) $25-35

85-364.jpg (30135 bytes)364. Western Africa (Parte de l’Africa), Gastaldi/Ramusio, Delle Navigationi et Viaggi nel qual si Contiene les Descrittione dele Africa, Venice, [1550-59]. 14.7 x 10.7". (BW) Woodblock map literally filled with illustrations of animals, natives, ships, sea monsters, villages. The map depicts the coast of Guinea, with a scene of natives paying homage to a chieftain. Below this appears a fortified Portuguese fort (present-day Elmina) which was founded by the Portuguese in 1482 and was the center for trade, in both gold and slaves. Ref: Norwich 314. Very good impression with only minor browning on fold, on quality paper. Number in ink in margin. (A)  Click image for full size. $550-600

365. South Africa (Congo, Cafrerie), de Vaugondy, Nouvel Atlas Portatif, Paris, [1778]. 11 x 9.5". (OC) Good impression, coloring and decorative cartouche with two distance scales. Extends south from about Cameroon and south Somalia. No hint of Lake Victoria. Good detail of Madagascar. Inset of the northern portion of Somalia, the Gulf of Aden and Socotra. On thick hand laid paper with wide margins and watermark. Light marginal stains at top. (A) $50-70

367. Central Africa (Abissinorum Sive Pretiosi Ioannis Imperiu), Mercator/Hondius, Amsterdam, ca. 1623. 19 x 13.2". (FC) Captivating map depicting the legendary realm of the Christian king Prester John. Two large lakes just north of the Mountains of the Moon are the source of the Nile River. Large inset within strapwork border Congo Regni in Africa Christiani Nova desciptio. Two strapwork cartouches. Moderately toned. (B) $500-550
