26. Western Hemisphere (America noviter delineata), Merian, Frankfurt, ca. 1630. 14 x 11.7". (FC) Lovely copper engraved map of the Americas based on the Blaeu and Hondius maps. North America is depicted with an odd New England coastline and the western coastline above California make the continent entirely too wide. There is only a hint of the Great Lakes. There is a large inland lake in equatorial South America. Small inset of Greenland. Strapwork title cartouche with a sea monster and Spanish galleons decorate the map. The map has been professionally restored to replace paper in the oceans and has been backed with tissue, all very well done except for a minor misalignment of neatline at bottom. Light impression in cartouche, else fine with attractive original color. Tape residue in margin. (A) $800-900
29. Western Hemisphere (LAmerica divisa Nesuoi Principali Stati), Antonio Zatta, Venice, 1776. 15.7 x 12". Attractive map with Italian place names and a sleeping lion in the lovely title cartouche. Good amount of detail in the Pacific including New Zealand. Depicts the 1768 voyage of Capt. Cook. The North American northwest coast has the old bulge and contains an elaborate depiction of the NORTHWEST PASSAGE, one of the last maps to do so. Ref: Lowery #711, Wheat (TMW) # 168. Map has been cleaned resulting in loss of most of the original color. Overall very good condition paper and crisp engraving. (A) $475
