(BW) Set of six maps showing the survey of the boundary between the territory of the United States and the possessions of Great Britain on a scale of 8 miles to 1". The maps are very detailed showing the topography, trading posts, stage roads, railways, Indian Reservations & villages and forts. Set is missing the Profile sheet called for in the title. 45. United States (United States Puzzle Map), Parker Brothers, Salem, MA, [1915]. (PC) A great cartographic curiosity. Jigsaw puzzle constructed out of paper covered wood pieces. The map covers the United States with insets around the edges of the Philippines, Hawaii and Alaska. Most pieces are cut along state lines. Complete with pasteboard box. Box has some tears, repaired with archival tape. The map itself is in remarkably fine condition. (A) $50

(FC) Significant REVOLUTIONARY WAR era map which shows the British colonies east of the Appalachian Mtns. with some very unusual borders. New Hampshires eastern border is the Atlantic. Connecticut surrounds Rhode Island and includes much of present-day Massachusetts, including Boston and Cape Cod. New York is divided into three sections which include the western part of Massachusetts and Vermont. Parts of northern Delaware and Maryland are also shown. Huge (uncolored) title cartouche. 55. United States, southeast (Nova Virginiae Tabula), Blaeu, Grand Atlas, Amsterdam, ca. 1640. 18.7 x 14.5". (FC) One of the most important 17th century maps of the Chesapeake Bay region. The map is a version of the one made in 1612 by Capt. John Smith which was the first to depict the bay and its tributaries with any accuracy. In the upper left corner is an engraving of the great Indian chief Powhatan seated on his throne and surrounded by his subjects. A Susquehanna chief is depicted on the right under a coat of arms and cartouche. Some minor uneven toning & small spots in margin, marginal tears professionally repaired. (BW) Copper engraved map of the southeastern seaboard with Georgia, the Carolinas and part of Virginia The colonies are confined east of the Appalachian Mountains with nothing west except les Cherokees. Very light foxing, which is barely noticeable. (A) $200

(BW) Covers the region from eastern Missouri to just beyond the Appalachian Mountains and from Louisiana through Florida. Includes an interesting inset of a section of the Missouri River locating Kanfez which appears to be Kansas City and Ft. dOrleans which is noted to be abandoned. Covered with locations of Indian villages and forts. States are shown with borders confined east of the Appalachian Mtns. One tiny rust spot, else fine and crisp on good paper. (A) $200

(BW) A finely detailed map of the region from about the 104th Meridian to the Pacific coast and from Port George in British Columbia to the Klamath River in Oregon. Fascinating notations, Indian names and trails. Large inset of the Columbia River. Issued folded, overall toned with a bit of unevenness, couple of tiny splits repaired with archival tape. (B) $150

(FC) Beautifully hand-colored lithographic map based on the surveys of W.H. Emory and the Pacific Railroad surveyors. Bit of light foxing on folds and a couple of small separations at intersections. 65. United Sates, western (Progress Map of the U.S. Geographical Surveys west of the 100th Meridian), Lt. George Wheeler, U.S. Gov., 1876. 22 x 16". (PC) This is one of successive progress maps issued during the course of this famous geographical survey. Wheeler had a grand scheme to map the area in squares and, despite criticism, the survey provided a major contribution to understanding the West. The map is covered with fascinating detail of survey and exploration routes, forts, existing railroads, as well as existing and proposed telegraph lines. Folding as issued. (A+) $125

(PC) Covers the region west of the 105th Meridian and between 43rd and 34th Parallels. Very good topographical detail, forts, Indian villages, exploration routes and wagon roads. Map dated 1860 attributing the sources of the map which include Fremont, Gunnison and several other notable explorers. At left is an unrelated map March Routes of Army of Tennessee from Savannah, Ga. to Columbia, Sc. 1865. Minor tear in margin, still fine. (A+) $125

70. Arizona (Map of a Survey and Reconnaissance of the Vicinity of the Mouth of the Rio Gila), Whipple, Wash. DC, 1849. 16.5 x 11". (BW) Illustrates a critical aspect of the Mexican Boundary Survey: shows the middle of the Rio Gila where it enters the Colorado as the point to anchor the boundary line in the east. Depicts the Village of Capitan Pasqual, Village of Capt. Anastasio and Capitan Anton in the vicinity of Yuma. And the Old Emigrant Route & General Kearneys Route. Ref: Wheat (TMW) #653. 71. Arizona (Map No. 2 Rio Colorado of the West), Ives, Report upon the Colorado River of the West, 1858. 34.5 x 14.5". (BW) Map depicts the Big Canon of the Colorado and represents one of the most important exploring efforts of the American southwest. In his book Mapping of the Trans-Mississippi West, Carl Wheat devotes several pages to Ives maps (#947 & 948). The steel engraving is very fine and detailed. Covers from Fort Defiance, Campbells Pass and Zuni in the east through Los Vegas and Mojave Canyon in the west. Shows The Old Spanish Trail, Whipples trail 1854-4 and Beals trail. Folded as issued. Binding tear and fold separations repaired with archival tape, otherwise map clean and bright. (A) $225

Hand drawn and lettered by Mr. Jackson on November 10, 1925. Names The Fisher, Noble, New Starr, Franklinite, and Contact claims. Good topographical information on a scale of one inch to 200 feet. Fine compass rose. Names distances to other mining area, e.g. Skull Valley is 5 miles SSE. Signed by Mr. Jackson. A rare find. Folds and a little staining at left, else fine. (FC) Five depictions of California on one sheet showing various representations; Neron Pecci Olen in 1604, Sanson in 1656, de Lisle in 1700, Kino in 1705, Societe des Jesuits in 1767. Many place names and dates of important explorations. A fascinating view of California cartography. Ref: Fite & Freeman #52. On thick paper with attractive modern color. $500 reserve. (A) $650
76. California (Sketch of the Route of Capt. Warners Exploring Party in Sacramento Valley & Sierra Nevada during the month of August October 1849), Lt. R.S. Williamson, U.S. Gov., 1849. 23.5 x 10.5". (BW) Capt. Warner was tasked with finding a suitable railroad route up the Sacramento Valley. Sadly, after he discovered a suitable pass, his party was ambushed by Indians and he was killed (the location of his death is marked on the map). His notes and a sketch map were rescued and from these Lt. Williamson was able to produce this map and a report which were the first published documents to show any detail of this country. Provides a fascinating view of the trails, farms, mines etc. along the route. Ref: Wheat (Gold Regions - #182 & TMW - #700). Folding map, trimmed close at bottom, as issued, otherwise very good. (BW) This early, historically significant, map of San Diego depicts the small town of San Diego with only a few structures and the roads leading into the town. Inset at top shows San Diego and False (Mission) Bays. Notations on the map concern the drainage problems in the area. Short binding tear just to neatline, repaired with archival tape, very light toning. (A) $175

(BW) Folding topographical map of northwestern Colorado. Bechler was one of several great topographers who surveyed Colorado with F.V. Hayden. His efforts, of which this is a typical example, provided a strong foundation for this monumental survey. (A+) $80

(BW) Graphic copper engraving of the Siege of St. Augustine complete with the blockading ships, army encampments and cannon fire. Below the map is a very good key to the various locations and a fascinating account of the siege. Trimmed close on binding side with binding tear, professionally repaired. Overall evenly toned. 141. Texas (Manuscript Survey Plat), B. Collinsworth, District Surveyor, Austin, ca. 1845. This is a manuscript survey plat and filed notes, complete with map of 430 acres on Canoe Bayou on a scale of 1000 varas to an inch. The notes detail the position of "430 acres of Land for Isacc Vandorn out of the league known as the Duke league on Lake Austin. Said survey is situated on the North East Boundary of said League and above and adjoining lands belonging to said Vandorn out of the same league and bounded as follows . . ." Great early survey language such as "1300 varas to a stake in the prairie from which the highest tree . . . to a stake on Canoe Bayou from which a willow on the bayou below bears S58E to a live oak in the middle of a bunch of timber in the prairie" etc. Issac Vandorn was one of the original Old Three Hundred settlers in Texas, fought for independence in the battle of Velasco and was elected the first sheriff of Matagorda County. On a sheet measuring 16 x 12.5", folded, with the map and notes on one half. Written in brown ink. Toned with minor darkening along folds, paper sound. 143. Texas (Map of Stephens County Texas), Land Dept. Texas & Pacific Railway Company, Marshall, TX, ca. 1890. 18 x 20". (PC) Separately issued lithographed map on thin laid paper. Details the entire county with unsold lands belonging to the Texas & Pacific Railway Co. colored in yellow. Also shows the boundaries of the Memphis El Paso and Pacific R.R. Reserve. Large blocks are designated, Lunatic Asylum, Blind Asylum, Orphan Asylum etc., which the railroad companies were required to develop. Also notes several names of land holders. Scale is 4000 Varas to 1 inch, (1900 varas square equally a 640 acre section). This was obviously a working map with several manuscript notations and boundary lines drawn in red and blue pencil. Has been professionally backed with Japanese tissue to repair some separations on folds. An unusual and scarce Texas & railroad item. (A) $600-700

(PC) A fascinating map and 80+ page booklet which includes a complete index for Texas featuring the 1920s census information, railroads, steamship lines, and most importantly AIRPORTS. The map is two-sided, one depicting the eastern region and the other the western region. Each is very detailed with the railroad network and the Air Trails complete with a key to various types of airports and facilities. A section of the booklet is called "Elements of Practical Air Navigation" which includes as one of the most important navigational instruments an accurate Air Map. Map separated from booklet, with a tear (repaired with archival tape), otherwise very good. (B) $100

(BW) An interesting map that was to be the basis of understanding the region for the following decade. It was the first authentic account of the exploration and navigation of the Colorado River from the Gila River to the Gulf of Mexico.
