(BW) Woodblock map covered with mountains, forests, rivers and towns, and in the oceans are several sea monsters and ships German text on verso with light show through. Some minor stains in border, but overall much better condition than normal for this map. (A) $450

Title cartouche (which names Ortelius) is surmounted by a figure of Europa with a cornucopia, flags, banners. The distance cartouche depicts several little cherubs cavorting with sea creatures. Folds into pasteboard slipcase with handwritten label. Case rubbed at corners, map very good. Scarce to find this early a pocket map in such good condition. (A) $400

(PC) Set of four maps: Map of Austria-Hungary; Map of Turkey in Europe, Romania-Servia, Bulgaria-Albania and Montenegro; Map of Russia; and Map of Germany. All maps are very detailed folding maps measuring approximately 21 x 28". (Map of Germany includes two separate maps in one cover) Each folds into cloth covers with gold stamped titles. Covers are all fine with maps generally fine except for some minor mis-folding and a couple of short separations. Generally the set has been little used. (A) $150

WWI Pocket map, dissected into 18 panels, linen mounted and folded into 5 x 8.5" red cloth boards. Includes the United Kingdom, much of Scandinavia & Germany and some of France with the cities: Paris, Warsaw, Wurttemburg, Budapest, Riga, Stockholm, etc. Extends north to include the Faroe Islands. Good detail and crisp, dark impression. Unusual to see hand applied water color this late. Map and covers are absolutely mint with all paper labels. (A+) $110

Map colored in outline with fully colored title and scale of miles cartouches which include the coat of arms of the Duke of Gloucester, to whom the map is dedicated. Fancy scroll titling, three distance scales. Includes all of the Czech Republic and most of "Slovenska." Prague is at left center. Extends to the Frontiers of Poland. (FC) Set of copper engraved maps covering the region of present day Czech Republic and East Germany. Covered with detail including roads and hundreds of tiny villages. Each has at least one attractive (uncolored) cartouche. All colored in gold to depict the major region with outline coloring in the surrounding regions. Some minor tears in margins, a couple of tears entering borders with old tape repairs, else maps are clean with crisp impressions. (B) $450

(OC) Handsome map of the region including Poland east to the Urals and from the Arctic Ocean to the Black & Caspian Seas. Decorative border that includes vignettes of Napoleons Flight from Moscow, a Russian bear, Polish Captives on their way to Siberia, the Neoskoi Prospect, St. Petersburg, a travelling sledge, a cavalry officer and a man & woman in native costume. Trimmed to border at top, as issued. Marginal foxing, else very good. (B) $60
199. Britain (Magne Britanniae Tabula), Visscher, Amsterdam, ca. 1700. 20.5 x 18.5". (FC) Large, attractive map of the British Isles richly decorated with a very large title cartouche surrounded by figures including a man slaying a multi-headed dragon. Opposite are three coats of arms being held aloft by cherubs and two more cherubs are feasting on fruit on top of the scale of miles cartouche. Fine detail throughout the map with crisp engraving and color. Map has been professionally repaired to close several tears, now nearly invisible. (B) $750

(BW) Crisp copper engraving of western England from Workington to Aberystwyth and including the Isle of Man. Fully engraved sea, fine strapwork title cartouche and sea monster make this an attractive map. Short split on fold (with old repair), some marginal tears, overall clean and crisp. (B) $150

Several strapwork cartouches, coats of arms, and a great scene of knights in battle, all in full original color. Engraved by Jodocus Hondius, imprint of John Sudbury and George Humble. (FC) Lovely small map of the southeast region of England including the British Channel north to include a bit of Leicester. England (The Countie Westmorland and Kendale the Chief Towne Described with the Armes of such Nobles as have bene Earles of either of them), John Speed, Theater of the Empire of Great Britaine, London, ca. 1623. 20 x 15". (FC) Sold by George Humble in Popes head alley against the Exchange. A excellent example of Speeds work in full original color. Beautifully decorated with a large plan of the vicinity of Kendale, elaborate title and scale of miles cartouches and the several coats of arms. Crisp impression. Text and engraving on verso, complete with hand-colored decorative engraving. Ref: Moreland & Bannister, p. 151. Some uneven toning, marginal tears and splits on fold. Could use some professional attention to preserve it, but is still a very attractive map. (C) Click image for full size. $300
207. England (The Road from London to Holy-head ), John Ogilby, Brittania, London, [1675]. 17 x 12". (FC) Ogilby pioneered a series of pictorial road maps of England. He designed them in strips radiating from London along the main post roads. This map details the road northwest from London through Dunstable to Towcester with fascinating details of the outskirts, including milestones, houses, bridges and topography. Large title cartouche surrounded by figures and a coat of arms. Very good old coloring. $425 reserve. (A+) Click image for full size. $525-600

Covered with tiny mountains, forests and hundreds of towns and villages. Simple title block with lower half left blank, apparently for a special dedication. Modern color. 209. England (Northumberland), Saxton/Lea, London, ca. 1690. 19.5 x 14.7". (FC) Scarce early county map with inset plans of Barwick and Newcastle. Further decorated with the Earles coats of arms and depictions of Roman antiquities found in the county. Evenly toned, some light creasing and a couple of marginal tears, just touching border (some with old repairs). Overall very good and attractive example of a seldom offered map. (FC) Delicately engraved strip map depicting the post road from just east of Kings Lyn to Yarmouth. Paper printed both sides, with continuation on back. 236. Netherlands (De Zype/Beemster/De Purmer/De Wormer/ and Caerte van Waterland), Moses Pitt, Amsterdam, ca. 1683. 18.2 x 13.5". (BW) Five charts on one large sheet of fine hand-laid paper. Each map depicts several parcels or kavels which were created by draining shallow lakes and sea inlets to produce farm land, called polder. Delicate copper engraving with title cartouches, compass roses and dykes with tiny windmills which were used to power the drainage pumps. Moses Pitts maps are quite scarce as few of his maps were published due to financial problems which resulted in his imprisonment for debt. Couple of tiny marginal tears, well away from image, repaired with archival tape, else very fine. (A+) $250

Also includes parts of Switzerland, Italy and Germany. The map was based on the work of Gilles Boileau de Bouillion. Two strapwork cartouches, original color. 242. France (Galliae Narbonensis Ora Marittima ), Ortelius, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp, [1570-81]. 8.5 x 12". (FC) Map of the Mediterranean coast of France from information by Carlous Clusius (1526-1609) which is not very accurate but very handsome.
