338. Africa (Chorographia orginis Nili juxta obervationem Odardi Lopez Fol 55. [together with] Chorographia Originis Nili ex Arabum Geographis deprobpta. Fol. 53 [and] Vera et Genuina Fontium Nili Topographia facta a P. Petro Pais 1618. Fol 56), A Kircher, Oedipus Aegyptiacus, Amsterdam, [1652]. (BW) Three maps of the origins of the Nile according to Duarte Lopez, Arab geography, and Peter Pais. The first (6.7" x 8.7") represents the origin of the Nile as explored by Lopez and described by Pigafetta, with the river emanating from two lakes, one below the other. The second (6.7" x 8.7") represents the Mountains of the Moon origin, north of Lake Zambia. The third (14" x 10") depicts in detail the Montes Lunae and the river valley as recorded by the Jesuit traveler Paez. All three maps are embellished with mountains, citadels, forests, unusual animals and sea monsters. Originally on one sheet, now separated. Crisp early impression. Ref: Norwich #156. 339. Africa (LAfrique divisee suivant lestendue de ses principales parties ), Jaillot, Paris, 1692. 34 x 21". (FC) Very large map (two sheets, joined) of the continent which also includes the southern Atlantic Ocean and a bit of Brazil. Based on the geography of Sanson, the map shows two large lakes, Zaire/Zembre and Zaflan, in Central Africa, which are the origin of the Nile. The River Zaire (Congo) also arises from Lake Zaire. The Kingdom of Monomotapa, in South Africa, is depicted with its capital on the Rio de Spirito Santa, and Vigiti Magna also appears. Most of the southern tip is called Terre Desrte. Ref: Norwich #46. Only ten regions named: Ethiope, Guinee, Abissinie, Nubie, Egipte, Saara desert, Nigritie, Barbarie, Ulgerid, and the Congo. No sign of Lake Victoria. French text at sides. Full wash color in oceans. (FC) Handsome map of the northern coast of Africa and the Mediterranean. Strapwork title banner, a ship and sea monsters decorate the map. Couple of marginal tears, one touching neatline and some light staining. (B) $250

(FC) Three maps on one sheet each depicting fierce battles on the Barbarie coast of Africa. All manner of warfare is depicted with cavalry, infantry, artillery and raging sea battles. 347. Northern Africa (Alexandria), Braun & Hogenberg, Civitates Orbis Terrarum, Cologne, ca. 1575. 18.7 x 14.5". (FC) Fabulous city view with the mosque dominating the skyline. The city is surrounded by countryside with people and camels and the foreground depicts many boats and ships. 1" x 1/4" hole in map and another similar hole in centerfold. Bottom border trimmed. Needs professional help, but overall paper is sound. (D) $100

(OC) Good impression, delicate coloring and decorative cartouche. Two distance scales. Northern Africa from Morocco to below the Gold Coast and Guinea. Names numerous deserts and extends to include Nubia and Abyssinia. On thick hand laid paper with watermark. (A) $75

(OC) Handsome, detailed map of northern Algeria extending to Tunis and to below the Atlas Mountains. Surrounded by beautifully rendered engraved scenes in b&w surrounding the map. Strong, crisp impression with good color. Full margins, with a few marginal spots, map fine. (A) $75
352. Egypt (Terra Svis Con:Tenta Bonis, Non Indiga Mercis, Avtiovs, Insolo Tanta Est Fidvcia Nilo), Ortelius, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp, ca. 1584. 19 x 15.5". (FC) Very unusual map of southern Egypt depicting the Nile River valley. This map, together with one of northern Egypt were based on Ortelius 1565 map of Ancient Egypt. They were issued between 1584 and 1592 and replaced with a single sheet map in the 1595 edition Thus, this is one of the scarcer Ortelius maps. Beautifully decorated with a large strapwork cartouche with a list of cartographical places & regions. Lower corner margin missing (1/8") from neatline, 2 marginal tears just touching neatline with a bit of uneven toning. Fine original color. (B) $250-300

North is at the right. Two large birds, the Boo-ank and the Hou-baara, shown in the lower right. Close trimmed at right and bottom, as issued. GENT-68. (B) $20

355. Western Africa (Guinee Grand Pays de LAfrique), Vander Aa, Leiden, ca. 1727. 14 x 10.2". (BW) Striking map of the western region of Africa from Sierra Leone to Gabon. Mountains and forests fill the interior with rhumb lines and a compass rose in the sea. Fine title cartouche depicting natives trading with Europeans, and elephants, and monkeys. (A+) $300
356. Western Africa (Royaumes de Congo et dAngola), Pierre Vander Aa, Leiden, ca. 1727. 13.5 x 11.2". (BW) Fine crisp copper engraved map of the western coast from about Port Gentil to Lobito. The land if filled with mountains, rivers, and forests with several place names particularly along the Congo River. Large, elaborate title cartouche surrounded by natives, lions, ostriches, elephants and monkeys. (A+) $300
357. Southern Africa (Aethiopia Inferior vel Exterior), Jansson, Amsterdam, ca. 1638. 19.5 x 15". (FC) Beautiful map covering the area from Congo-Zanzibar to the Cape. Janssons map is nearly identical to Blaeus map of 1571. The cartography was based on Portuguese exploration and travelers tales and rumors about the interior. Therefore much of the interior geography is false. Title cartouche with two natives holding an ox skin, on which the title is engraved. It is further embellished with various animals, including two large elephants, and sailing ships. Overall toning, marginal split on fold professionally repaired. Beautiful original color. 358. Madagascar (Insula S. Laurentii vulgo Madagascar), Blaeu, Grand Atlas, Amsterdam, ca. 1662. 21.5 x 16.5". (FC) Splendid copper engraved map of Madagascar and the Mozambique coastline. One of the only sixteenth century maps to focus on this region. The title refers to the Portuguese name for the island, who called it St. Laurence on whose day (Feb. 2) they landed there in 1506. Blaeu based this map on a 1658 map by de Flacourt. Fine title cartouche with native people and wildlife. Further embellished with two compass roses and four sailing ships, all fully colored. Marginal split on fold, else very fine condition. (A+) $500
