(BW) Fine copper engraving with two cartographic figures, a terrestrial and a celestial globe. Minor browning on paper edges, engraving is clean and crisp (A) $ 200-250

(FC) Fabulous title page depicting Atlas standing on the world (Eastern Hemisphere) and holding up the sky with the sun and moon in the background. Old color. Some minor marginal soiling. (BW) Sheet consisting primarily of the textual title with a small engraving at bottom (5.2 x 4") of a Northern Hemisphere. The map has a banner title and is surrounded by the sun, moon and stars. It depicts CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND. Also includes the index sheet for the atlas. Surface soiling, a few short marginal tears and some old manuscript notations in margin. $300 Reserve. (BW) Fine engraved portrait of the founder of the most important German cartographic publishing firm of the eighteenth century. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences and in 1715 was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. One corner of page chipped with some light damp stain in margins, well outside image which is crisp and fine. (A)   Click thumbnail at left for larger image.  $ 250

8. World (Werelt Caert), Stoopendaal, [1716]. 18 x 12". (FC) Beautiful double hemisphere from a Dutch Bible. CALIFORNIA IS AN ISLAND, Australia is partially mapped and there is only a hint of New Zealand. The northwest American and east Asian coastlines are incomplete. Diagrams of the Copernican & Ptolemaic solar systems rest between the hemispheres. Fine condition, later color. (A+) Illustrated above.  $ 1,600-1,800

(OC) Fine, double hemisphere, world map surrounded by four depictions of theories of the Solar System and two celestial hemispheres. CALIFORNIA IS DEPICTED AS AN ISLAND. A finely engraved, very full map. Faint scattered foxing with one marginal tear. (B) $450 reserve. Click on image for full-size.  $ 550-600

10. World (Observatioins sure les Points Cardinaux. Lignes, et Cercles de la Sphere.), Buy de Mornas, Atlas Methodique et Elementaire de Geographie, Paris, [1790]. 10 x 11.5". (FC) On a full sheet (19.5"x13") with French text at the sides. Nice, simple, double hemisphere (5" hemispheres) world map with full color - blue wash in the oceans. Good impression on hand laid paper, watermark. Quaintly shaped continents, Australia is only partly delineated, no place names within continents. (A) $ 125

11. World (Mappemonde en deux Hemispheres), A.H. Brue, Paris, 1820. 22 x 13". (OC) Fine copper engraving on a very large sheet of heavy paper with extremely wide margins, the royal seal, keyboard border. Colored to depict the continents. Good detail. (A+) $ 300

12. World (Western Hemisphere [together with] Eastern Hemisphere), J & C Walker, SDUK, London, ca. 1840. 12.7 x 12.7". (OC) Nice pair of hemisphere maps with country borders depicted within each continent. The United States is shown with British claims into present day Oregon, Texas is part of Mexico. The Pacific islands are well depicted. (A) $ 200

83-013.JPG (79617 bytes)13. Ancient World (A Map of the Old World, as it appeared before God destroy’d it with the Waters of the Flood), Emanuel Bowen, Gentleman’s Magazine, London, 1736. 4.4 x 7.4". (BW) Hemisphere on a finely engraved pedestal. Shows the ancient earth surrounded by the Great Abyss. Names Moscovy, Britain, Africa, Persia, Siam, Borneo. On thick hand-laid paper. Map is pasted to newspaper page, as originally issued. Some offsetting from opposite text. GENT-1, the first map in the Gentleman’s Magazine and an early example of Bowen’s engraving that includes text so small it requires a loop to read. 14. Ancient World (Division Generale et Naturelle de la Terre, Suivant les Anciens), Buy de Mornas, Atlas Methodique et Elementaire de Geographie, Paris, [1790]. 10 x 11.5". (FC) Strong, crisp impression on a full sheet (19.5"x13") of hand laid paper with French text at both sides. Fully hand colored including blue in the oceans. Siberia is Terrae Incognitae, Australia is only partially delineated & is labeled Capricorni. (A) $ 75

(FC) Double hemispheric projection of each pole up to the equator. On a full sheet (19.5"x13") of hand laid paper with French text at the sides. Very handsome original color. Australia is New Hollande and Tasmania is attached as is New Guinea. (A) See full image. $ 125

16. North Pole (Set of 3 maps), Capt. John Franklin, A Journey to the Polar Sea, 1819/20. (BW) A Chart of the Discoveries & Route of the Northern Land Expedition under the Command of Captain Franklin, R.N., in the Years 1820 & 1821 (32 x 19"); Route of the Expedition from York Factory to Cumberland House and the Summer and Winter Tracks from thence to Isle A La Crosse (9.5 x 22"); and Route of the Expedition from Isle A La Crosse to Fort Providence, 1819-1820 (20 x 9.5"). Folds, as issued. Some minor foxing, small tears, two with minor loss, repaired with Japanese tissue. A nice set. (B) $ 75

17. Cartography (Colures, Tropiques, Cercles Polaires, et Leurs Usages [together with] Division Astronomique de la Terra), Buy de Mornas, Atlas Methodique et Elementaire de Geographie, Paris, [1790]. 10 x 11.5". (FC) First is a strongly engraved and well colored three dimensional sphere showing the arctic & Antarctic circles, tropic of Cancer and Capricorn and the ring from pole to pole labeled Colure des Solstices. Second shows much of the same in two dimensions only. Both on a full sheet (19.5"x13") with French text at the sides. The pair. (A) $ 60

(FC On a full sheet (19.5"x13") with French text at sides. The first is a rendering of two beautiful, large compass roses (4-1/2") with full color, fleur-de-lys and the sun with a face. Surrounded by degree wheels - a handsome sheet. The second is numerous spheres, triangles, shapes and angles. With two degree wheels. Fine watermarks on both. (A)  A fine pair. Exhibiting an accurate Map of all parts of the Earth in which it will be Visible with the North Pole, according to the latest Discoveries By G. Smith), T. Jefferys, Gentleman’s Magazine, London, 1748. 17.2 x 11.7". (BW) Polar projection showing the worldwide extent of the eclipse. Surrounded by 24 vignettes of the eclipse in various world cities. Decorative cartouche and titling. Crisp impression on hand-laid paper. Overall light toning, tiny split at fold . (B) $ 200

(FC) On a full sheet (19.5"x13") with French text at sides. Fully engraved with swirls beyond the solar system and the ‘Firmament.’ The last planet before the firmament is Saturn and her five moons. 21. Solar System, Moon (Des Planetes Subalternes et de la Paralaxe), Buy de Mornas, Atlas Methodique et Elementaire de Geographie, Paris, [1790]. 10 x 11.5". (FC) Two diagrams of the moon's orbit on a full sheet (19.5"x13") of fine laid paper with French text at the sides. Large and finely engraved moon with face and radiating lines and the earth as a sphere make this an attractive sheet. (A) $75

22. Solar System, Seasons (Explication des Saisons.), Buy de Mornas, Atlas Methodique et Elementaire de Geographie, Paris, [1790]. 10 x 11.5". (FC) On a full sheet (19.5"x13") with French text at sides. Interesting diagram with the sun at center and the earth in orbit at four different positions. Each dated (March 21, June 22, Sept. 21 & Dec. 22) and named Troisieme, Quatrieme, Premiere and Deuxieme positions, respectively. Elliptical orbit and earth’s rotational direction clearly shown. Two other diagrams in text. (A) $ 75
