3. World (Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula), Willem Blaeu, Atlas Major, Amsterdam, ca. 1630-58. 21.4 x 16". (FC) Magnificent world map on Mercators projection. A supreme example of the mapmakers art with carte-a-figures border depicting allegorical representations of the sun, moon, the five known planets, the four elements and the four seasons. Along the bottom are vignettes showing the seven wonders of the world: the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Colossus over the harbor at Rhodes, the Pyramids, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus at Cairo, the Temple of Diana, the Statue of Jupiter and the lighthouse at Alexandria. The map itself is richly decorated with cartouches, sea battles, monsters and compass roses. State 4; reference Shirleys World #255. 4. World (Map of the World, on Mercators Projection), Anon., Gentlemans Magazine, London, [1755]. 11.2 x 7.2". (BW) Crisp impression with a large watermark in paper. Shows political boundaries throughout the world. Undefined west coast of North America, Tasmania and New Guinea are attached to Australia. Ref: GENT-94. Still bound into the complete Gentlemans Magazine with related article on how to use the map. (A+) $275
5. World (Planisphere Suivant la Projection de Mercator), Bonne, Raynals Atlas de Globe Terrestre, Paris, [1780]. 12.5 x 8.2". (BW) A fine world chart with a crisp impression. Tasmania is attached to Australia. Greenland is likewise attached to North America. Trade winds shown between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Alaska is a large island off the coast of Canada. The western U.S. is completely blank, save for Santa Fe. (A+) $200

7. World (Mappemonde), C.V. Monin, Atlas Classique de la Geographie, Paris, [1834]. 19.7 x 11.2". (OC) Attractive double hemisphere with the heights of the worlds mountains shown below the hemispheres. Swash lettered title and keyboard style border. (A+) $175

9. World (World on Mercators Projection), John Tallis, London, ca. 1850. 13.7 x 10". (OC) Lovely steel engraved map depicting the steam routes to the British Colonies throughout the world. Seven, fully colored vignettes: Pont Neuf - Paris, Niagara, Constantinople, London, Gibraltar, The Pyramids of Ghazeh, and Vesuvius. All surrounded in a fully colored decorative border. (FC) Large map with a decorative border, colored to depict individual countries. Several exploration routes depicted along with major shipping lanes. Light damp stain in margins. 11. World (Western Hemisphere Eastern Hemisphere), Johnson & Ward, New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, New York, ca. 1865. 26.5 x 16". (FC) Double hemisphere map colored to depict political boundaries with good detailed throughout. (A) $90
12. World (The World in Hemisphere on Various Projections), Blackie & Son, The Comprehensive Atlas & Geography of the World, Edinburgh, [1884]. 19.5 x 14". (PC) Attractive, double hemisphere map with three projections below: The World on the Plane of the Equator; Southern Circumpolar Region; and The World on the Plane of the Horizon of London Showing the Greatest Mass of Water and the Greatest Mass of Land. A nice sheet. (A+) $50
13. World (British Empire), John Bartholomew, The Citizens Atlas, Edinburgh, ca. 1895. 16 x 12". (PC) Map on Mercators projection colorfully depicting the extent of the British Empire. Two large insets depicting the Russian, Dutch, German and French possessions throughout the world. (A+) $25
14. World, Ancient (Theatrum Historicum An Historical Map of the Roman Empire and the Neighboring Barbarous Nations), Herman Moll, The World Described, London, 1709. 46 x 19". (OC) Fascinating historical map of the extend of the Roman Empire in Europe, western Asia and northern Africa. Two large hemispheres titled Supplementum Theatrum Historicum are inset into the corners of the map. Filled with fascinating notations including one speculating that the Romans "penetrated as far as ye Indes" in America. Two decorative title cartouches. Printed on two sheets, joined and folded. Some minor toning on joint, folds with some splits repaired with archival tape. Overall very clean and bright. (B) $400 [Click here to view image]
15. World, miscellaneous (Diversite des Ombres et Diverse Situation des Habitans de la Terre [together with] Climats), Martinet, Paris, ca. 1750. 10 x 11.5". (OC) Pair of nice maps with columns of French text describing the coloration of the maps. First is a double hemisphere projection with two tiny spots on fold, else fine. The second covers only the Eastern Hemisphere. (B) $50
16. World, miscellaneous (Lot of 15 maps). Set of maps including 7 by R. Wilkinson (1794) (OC), five by S.A. Mitchell (1860-1879) (FC), two by Rand McNally (1898) (PC) including Hawaii, and one by Harper & Brothers (OC) circa 1850. Some duplicates of Ireland & Scotland. A nice set in very good condition. 18. World - Oceans (Various Charts of Islands &c. in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans), Alex. Hogg, London, ca. 1784. 8 x 12". (BW) Interesting sheet containing 5 charts. Largest is titled Chart of the New Northern Archipelago; discovered by the Russians, in the Seas of Kamtschatka & Anadir. It shows the northeast coast of Asia & Alaska as an island and a long stretch of Aleutian Islands. Other maps include, the Azores, Canary, Madera & Cape Verde islands, each with a nice cartouche. 19. Polar Regions (North Polar Regions (and) South Polar Regions), John Bartholomew, The Citizens Atlas, Edinburgh, ca. 1895. 16.5 x 12". (PC) Two maps on a double page sheet. Each quite detailed with points of recent explorations. (A+) $15
20. Cartographic Curiosity (Meerwunder und Seltzame Their/Wie die in den Mitnachtigen Landern/ im Meer und auff dem Landtgefunden Werden), Munster, Cosmographia, Basle, ca. 1580. 13.7 x 10.2". (BW) Munsters famous woodblock illustration of the sea monsters which sailors could expect to find in the northern seas. Light stain, a couple professional repairs of marginal tears $ fold, still very good. Very scarce. (B) $600
21. Solar Eclipse (The Geography of the Great Solar Eclipse of July 14, MDCCXLVIII. Exhibiting an accurate Map of all parts of the Earth), T. Jeffreys, Gentlemans Magazine, London, 1748. 17.2 x 11.7". Polar projection showing the extent of the eclipse. Surrounded by 24 vignettes showing the eclipse in various cities of the world. 22. Celestial (Lot of 3 maps), Martinet/Buy de Mornas, Paris, ca. 1750. 10 x 11.5". (OC) Three charts with French text at sides. One shows the Northern Hemisphere, Milky Way and major stars useful in navigation. 2nd is an engraving of a large amilary-type sphere showing the position of the polar & tropic circles, the equinox & the solstices. The last shows how to use the suns position & geometry to determine the solstices and equinox. Light toning on folds. (B) $75
