(New Military Map of the United States…), Johnson & Ward, New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, New York, 1861. 23.7 x 17.2". (FC) Fine Civil War period map. This is a later issue (probably 1864) which shows the states and territories rather than the military departments. There is a very large Idaho Ty. which encompasses present-day Montana and Wyoming. Other territories with provisional borders include Dakota, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. Nine insets: New Orleans, Mobile Bay , Pensacola Bay, Key West, Savannah River & Savannah, Charleston Harbor, Hampton Roads area, Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Names many forts and military outposts. Minor light foxing, mostly in margins. (B) $200

45. United States (Map of the United States), Mitchell, Primary Geography, Philadelphia, ca. 1861. 10.2 x 5.2". (FC) Interesting western territories with Dakota and Nebraska reaching to the Rocky Mountains. Washington wrapping around Oregon and encompassing all of present day Idaho, a large Utah with a narrow Nevada including part of California up to the Sierra Nevada Mtns., and Arizona below New Mexico as a Confederate Ty. Trimmed at bottom to within 1/8" of neatline. Recent color. (A) $45

48. United States, eastern and southern (A Map of the British American Plantations, extending from Boston in New England to Georgia …), E. Bowen, The Gentlemen’s Magazine, 1754. 11 x 8.7". (BW) Interesting, very detailed map. Shows the watershed in great detail. Names many rivers, Indian tribes and trails, & mountain ranges. Pictorial cartouche with two crowned Indians and the head of an Anglo with an arrow stuck in it. A most desirable sheet still bound into the original Gentleman’s Magazine, July, 1754. Ref: GENT-89. 49. United States, eastern (Map of the Northern Part of the United States of America), Abraham Bradley, Morse’s American Gazetteer, [1797]. 15.5 x 8.4". (BW) Copper engraved map covering from Maine to just past the Mississippi River and south to include Kentucky and Virginia. Good detail in the east of cities and towns. The western part of the map is filled with interesting topographical detail, notations such as "Fine Prairies" and "Very Large Meadows". Map has been laid down on a sheet of rag mat, else fine and clean. (A) $200

51. United States, eastern (Etats-Unis de L’Amerique du Nord), Anon., ca. 1830. 10 x 7.7". (OC) Interesting map with states shown up to the Mississippi River. Depicts Arkansas Territory and "Districts" for numerous Indian nations. Texas is shown as a state in Mexico. (A) $75

52. United States, eastern, (United States) John Tallis, London, [1857]. 12.7 x 9.5". (OC) Great map of the eastern states and some very interestingly shaped western territories up to about the Rocky Mountains. Surrounded by a fully colored, decorative border and vignettes including a buffalo hunt, Penn’s treaty with the Indians, Washington’s Monument (which includes a statue at the top which was never actually installed), portraits of Franklin and Washington, and two U.S. seals. (FC) Scarce folding, CIVIL WAR, map printed for the "Rebellion Record". Stretches west to about the 103rd Meridian. Depicts Pony Express Route, railroads, U.S. Mail routes and other important roads. Four ships decorate the map. Very fine condition. (A+) $450-500

(FC) Finely engraved, well-colored with very decorative border. Extremely detailed at 10 miles per inch showing small roads, railroads, villages, etc. Railway extends to Provincetown on Cape Cod. 57. United States, southern (A Map of Part of West Florida, from Pensacola to the Mouth of the Iberville River …), J. Lodge, Gentleman’s Magazine, 1772. 13.5 x 7.3". (BW) Includes Mobile Bay and Ft. Conde, New Orleans and "Plantations" on the Mississippi well north of New Orleans. Large inset Plan for a New Settlement shows much detail including docks along the river. This map was published in response to reports the British government was considering the settlement of a colony on the banks of the Mississippi. The point suggested was near today’s Baton Rouge. (BW) Route of the Mormon Battalion through the Southwest. Filled with notations and comments. Table of distances from "Independence Mtns. To Pacific" Crisp, fine impression. Map is near mint: clean, no tears and no splits - extraordinary condition for this map. (A+) $175

(FC) Fine example of this interesting map of the Southwest. The first Arizona Terr. boundaries still showing the old New Mexico county divisions. Early provisional boundary between Nevada and Utah on the 115th Meridian. Filled with many wonderful and often incorrect notations. Shows forts, U.S. Mail routes, the Pony Express Route, emigrant route to California and proposed R.R. routes. Two tiny light spots in title, else, clean and bright. (OC) Most of Texas and Indian Territory except for the eastern portion from about Matagorda Bay and Ft. Washita in Indian Territory. Also much of New Mexico, but not Santa Fe. Many notations including "Wild Horses and Cattle." Good impression and color. Margins a little rough, soft fold, but map fine, (A) $70

(PC) Crisply printed and finely detailed map showing CA, OR, WA, NV, UT, ID, AZ and parts of WY and MT. Great RR’s detail with spurs ending at Frisco, UT; Baker City, OR; Hailey, ID; Eureka, NV, to name a few. (A) $25

68. Alaska, Dodd & Mead, 1907. 10.5 x 8.5". (PC) Fascinating map colored to depict the locations of various natural resources including gold, silver, tin, coal and others. (A+) $15

69. Arizona & New Mexico (Sketch of Public Surveys in New Mexico, to accompany Report of the Survey General 1856), U.S. State Surveys, 1856. 32 x 22". (BW) Very early state survey of the region which also includes much of Utah and Indian Territory. Most major rivers are shown, but inaccurately. Hardly any information on mountains. Names many Indian tribes. A fascinating early look at our Southwest. Folds as issued. Browning only along a couple folds, close at binding side (as issued), short tear, repaired with archival tape - overall much better than normally found. (B) $225

71. California, Geo. Cram, Unrivaled Family Atlas, Chicago, [1883]. 12 x 18.5". (PC) Double page sheet with good color, decorative borders. Detailed with RR’s, topo and political divisions. A few light stains in map. Nevada on back (B). $25

72. California & Nevada (Asher & Adams’ California & Nevada - Northern Portion [together with] Southern Portion)), 1872. 23 x 16.5". (FC) Two detailed maps with light coloring, Northern map covers from just above San Jose to the state line. Counties, cities, watershed and lakes shown. Large number of RR’s, the furthest north ends at Red Bluff, none shown into Virginia City. The Southern map extends south from just above the Bay of Monterey and Santa Cruz. No RR’s in the LA area. Includes the Catalina Islands and down to San Clemente Is. Las Vegas is not named. Browned at edges with a few tears, tiny portion of one corner missing, far from neatline. The pair. (B) $60

(BW) The preliminary sketch of the map eventually published in 1881. Covers the region that includes Gray’s Pk, Colorado Springs, Pagosa Springs and south to Taylor Pk and Las Vegas, NM. Browning along folds and splits at fold intersections. Needs a little TLC. (C) $60

75. Connecticut (Geographical, Historical and Statistical Map of Connecticut), Carey & Lea, American Atlas, Phila., [1822]. 11.5 x 9.7". (FC) First edition of this detailed map of the state surrounded by text on a folio sheet. Revolutionary War battle sites are located. Interesting text, particularly regarding Yale University, which is noted as having 5 professors and a student body of 412. Minor browning along centerfold and light damp stain in margins. (B) $200

The Capitol and other major monuments and sites are shown. Decorative grapevine border. Light spotting in lower quarter. (B) $45

82. Illinois (Geographical, Statistical and Historical Map of Illinois), Carey & Lea, American Atlas, Philadelphia, [1822]. 8.7 x 11.7". (FC) This is the first separate map of Illinois to be published in an atlas. Very early county development (19), only in the southern part and a large section of "Bounty Lands" between the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. The state capital is Vandalia. The site of Chicago is identified as "The garrison attacked by the Indians, and, after their surrender, basely murdered". Present day Iowa is part of Missouri Territory and Wisconsin is North West Territory. Surrounded by text on a full folio sheet. Professionally repaired split on centerfold. (FC) Derived from Bellin’s plan of New Orleans and made about 50 years after the city’s founding. The plan depicts large empty tracks of land surrounding the city core with each building depicted. Beautifully colored. Only 7 counties and all but the extreme northern portion of the state is divided into large townships, with some areas still noted as "Ungranted Land". There is a "Grant to Dartmouth College". The text includes much of interest concerning Dartmouth and Phillips Exeter Academy. Manuscript written date under title in map, minor offsetting and short split on centerfold, not affecting map. (B) $150

Only the second edition of this early map. Folds into leather covers with fine gilt lettering, with index. 122. Tennessee (Geographical, Statistical and Historical Map of Tennessee), Carey & Lea, American Atlas, Philadelphia, [1822]. 18.7 x 11". (FC) Nice map of the state surrounded with text below on a full folio sheet. The state has only 52 counties, plus a large area in the extreme southeast labeled "Cherokee Lands" where "Brainard, one of the Missionary Stations" is located (present-day Chattanooga). Memphis was founded only 3 years before this map was issued. Murfreesborough is the state capital here. Includes an additional sheet of text relating to the state. A little very light foxing and professionally repaired split on centerfold. A great early map. (B) $350

Depicts "Major Belknap’s Camp, The position selected for the post for the Depot". Insets of the Channel through the Pass and the Passage through the Raft. (A+) $175

Bache, U.S. Coast Survey, Washington DC, 1860. 24.7 x 10". (BW) The first covers the gulf coast from Laguna Madre to Galveston Bay. Couple of faint spots, else very good. The second depicts Galveston Bay and West Bay. Both are same size. Fine. (A) $60

Light impression in the middle of the plate affects six county names around Dawson. Light color and some spots. (C) $20

(FC) Interesting CIVIL WAR map compiled from the official maps of the War Dept. Depicts many important battle sites, & troop movements. Close margin, at bottom, as issued. Tiny bit of light foxing, overall fine. (B) $175
