The following four lots are from Botanifchen Bibliothec by Dr. Michael Bernhardt Valentini, published in Frankfurt in 1719. This was a dictionary of medicinal plants. Each is a copper engraving with depictions of several individual plants. Each plant is shown with its root system and in full bloom. Each is on a 8 x 14" sheet. All are crisp impressions in very good condition.

The following lots are from George Bickhams Universal Penman published in London, 1741. Bickham was one of the most famous calligraphers of the 18th century. Each sheet is copper engraved with beautiful calligraphy and the poem or essay. The fine hand laid paper, measuring approximately 8 x 13", is engraved on one side only.

The following lots are wood engravings from an account of Capt. James Cooks voyages of exploration. Alexander Hogg in London published them in A New, Authentic, and Complete Collection of Voyages Round the World, circa 1784 (unless otherwise noted). Each uncolored engraving is approximately 13.5 x 8.5".
354. Pacific (Lot of 10 prints). Nice group of views of various islands in the Pacific. Toned with some scattered foxing. Could use cleaning. (B) $175
355. Pacific (The Landing of Capt. Cook, &c. at Erramanga, One of the New Herbrides). Capt. Cooks landing party is met by a group of angry natives whose spears are raised. Cook is aiming his rifle, as his men push off from the shore. Toned. (A) $35
356. Pacific (A View in the Island of New Caledonia [together with] A Man & Woman of New Caledonia). Two fine prints. The first depicts a village on the lush island and the other is two handsome portraits. Toned. (A) $40

358. Pacific (The Inside View of a House in the Island of Ulietea, with an elegant Representation of a Dance to the Music of that Country), ca. 1784. A fine scene of dancing ladies, costumes and musical instruments. Toned with foxing in margins. (A) $30
359. Pacific (Lot of 5 prints), ca. 1800. This group of prints is from a different edition of an account of Cooks voyages. They are approximately 7 x 5". Included are 2 nice dance and ceremonial scenes, 2 views in Hawaii and one print of various tools from Tahiti. Some light foxing in margins. (A) $50
360. Easter Island (A View of Monuments, etc. in Easter Island). Interesting engraving of the monuments with two natives and an ominous looking skeleton. Toned with a couple of spots in margin. (B) $30

362. Tahiti (Lot of 3 prints). Great scenes of Tahitian life: An Exact Representation of a Dance in Otaheite; A View of the Island of Otaheite, with several Vessels of that Island; and Representation of the Body of Tee, a Chief as preserved after Death, in Otaheite. First is toned with some marginal foxing, others are clean. A nice set. (A) $75
363. Antarctic (Pair of prints). Includes a view of Christmas Harbor, Kerguelen Island with ships in the harbor and a shore full of penguins. The other print contains various coastal views of the island. Toned with some foxing and offsetting. (B) $25
364. New Zealand (Lot of 3 prints). Each print contains various engravings of weapons, carvings, tools, ornaments and individuals. Toned with a tiny bit of light foxing. (B) $35
365. New Zealand (A Man of New Zealand, A Woman of New Zealand [together with] The Inside of a Hippah, in New Zealand), ca. 1800. 7 x 4.5". Pair of nice copper engravings from another, smaller edition of Cooks voyages. (A+) $50
366. Alaska & Asia (Lot of 8 prints). Lot of prints covering parts of Alaska and Kamtschatka. Includes a great view of two ships stranded in the ice, five prints of villages or the interiors of native habitations, and three sheets with various coastal views. 367. Animals. One sheet containing 3 depictions: A Young Sea Otter found off the North West Coast of America; An Opossum, a Quadruped of Van Diemens Land; and A White Bear found in the Pacific Ocean near Icy Cape. Toned with rough margins. (B) $20
The following lots are from The Naturalists Library - Ornithology, edited by Sire William Jardine, London, circa 1840. Each is a hand-colored copper engraving, with the birds colored and the background uncolored. They were engraved by the famous firm of Lizars & Co. Each measures 6.5 x 4".
368. Robin Flycatcher [and] Whiskered Fantail. Pair of fine engravings, colored in shades of brown and gray. (A+) $50
369. Red-billed Whidah [and] Great Senegal Swallow [and] Kite. Three attractive prints. The Whidah has a tail twice as long as his body and is very pretty. The Swallow is colored black and rust and paper is a bit toned. The Kite is a handsome bird of prey in colors of black, gray and rust. A nice set. (A+) $75
370. Swallow-tailed Nauclerus [and] Grey Wagtail. Pair of prints depicting birds with very long tails with colors of black, gray, light blue and yellow. (A+) $50
371. The Solan Goose [and] Wood Pigeon. Pair of nice prints, each with a pair of birds. The Solon Goose shows both adult and young plumage perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. The pigeons are colored light blue and pale pink. (A+) $50
372. Crimson Shouldered Caterpillar Catcher [and] Fork-tailed Gaper. Two striking black birds with bright red patches. Make a very attractive pair. (A+) $50
The following lots are copper engravings from The History and Topography of the United States of North America, published by John Howard Hinton, Boston, in 1846. These uncolored engravings are fine early American views.
373. Title page - History America Vol. II. 6 x 9.5". View of the old Fort at Connanicut, RI at sunset with fishermen in the foreground. Scene is surrounded with an elaborate engraved oval frame with the title, topped by an American eagle, and at the bottom are two sea nymphs. Minor spotting in margins, not affecting image. (A) $35
374. Capture of the British Frigate Curriere by the U.S. Frigate Constitution. 8 x 6". Striking scene of the sea battle just as the British ships mast is broken and she is captured. (A) $30

The following lots are original, tinted lithographs from various Pacific Railroad survey reports, published circa 1855. These views, done by some of the finest American artists, are often the earliest recorded prints of the regions. Each is about 6 x 9".

The following lots are tinted lithographs (approximately 6.5 x 9.5") from Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan by Adm. Matthew Perry, published in 1856. This was the first American expedition to Japan and provided the outside world with some of the first official views of the people and countryside.

The following five lots are tinted lithographs published in The Comprehensive Atlas & Geography of the World, by Blackie & Son, London, in 1884. Each print contains a view of several types of individuals in native costume. Most also show the type of housing in the background. Each is approximately 10 x 7" with the scene and the title, (including ethnic identification of each individual) enclosed is a decorative border.

426. South America, Brazil (Fluvius Grandis), John Ogilby, America, London, ca. 1671. 13.7 x 11.2". (BW) Fine copper engraving from this important record of the settlement of the Americas during the 17th century. This view is of the Amazon delta and the Portuguese fort protecting it. Not dated but probably 1900-1920, or earlier, judging from poses, depth of field and subject movement. Each has over printed title from old typewriter: Birthplace of Queen Emma;- Kalakanas Hula Girls; Native Grass House - Eating Poi; Hawaiian Hula Hula Dancers; Hawaiian Flower Girls. All prints feature Native Americans and include When His Heart if Bad, Her Calf (a great buffalo hunting scene), Hostiles Watching the Column, The Coming Storm, and The Twilight of the Indian. Both perched on a branch above the beach, which is covered with seashells. A ship is sailing in the background. Mat burn in margins and some tape burn on back. Each sheet contains 4 separate groups of people, each representing various types within a specific region from several different centuries. Included in the lot are Arabic, Christian, Roman, Greek, Swiss, German, Mongolian, Italian, English, and Russian. Each engraving is finely hand-colored and very attractive. Each sheet could be divided into 4 separate prints. A couple of tears, over all very good. (B) $100

Each plate is a color-colotype with a group of pretty ladies finely dressed that years fashion. Each is dated in the title: 1857, 58, 59, 68, 65, 63, 62, 74, 72, & 71. On heavy card stock paper, with some mounted on a black paper backing. All age toned, some with chipped corners. The 1857 plate has an adhesive stain in images, all other images very good. (B) $100

This appears to be an engraving of the Boscovich Anemoscope found in Rome in 1759 by Ruggero Giuseppe Boscovich, an Italian mathematician, astronomer, physicist and Jesuit who taught in Rome. It was found outside the Capaneman Gate and was placed there by the Romans after being looted from ancient Greece. An interesting engraving for the collector of scientific instruments. The portraits themselves are only about 2 x 3" with the titling taking of the rest of the plate. These are very attractive framed. Includes, Louis XVI King of France & Oliver Cromwell. 462. Native American (Tewa War -God Effigies), Edward S. Curtis, North American Indian, 1925. 6.2 x 8.5". (BW) A fine photogravure on Japanese Vellum paper. E.S. Curtis is credited with producing the most important photo history of Native Americans. Depicts two effigies of the Tewa pueblo in New Mexico. Crease in margin, far from image, else fine. (A) $125

Subject matter includes Uncle Sam, civil service, fishing dispute between the U.S. and Canada, the Democratic ticket, carpetbaggers, Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall. (A+) $75
