26. North America and northeastern Asia (A General Map of the Discoveries of Admiral De Fonte & Others by M. De lIsle), Gentlemans Magazine, 1754. 10 x 7.7". (BW) Reduced version of this famous map. Includes a huge "Sea of the West" sailed "through by J. de Fuca in 1592." Also includes a huge island (Alaska) offshore and east from the Kamchatka Peninsula. The Northwest Passage is clearly shown, including lakes and notations on "8 cataracts in all 32 feet high." Mountains of Ice in arctic may refer to icebergs. A fascinating map still bound in the original March 1754 issue of The Gentlemans Magazine. Bound in at the start of the long and most interesting related article. Ref: GENT-88 & Wagner (NW) 158-9. (A) $17527. North America (Partie de la Carte du Capitaine Cluny), De Vaugondy/Diderot, Enclyclpoedie, London, 1769. 16 x 8.2". (BW) Depicts North America from above the Arctic Circle and to the Gulf of Mexico. The most important feature of the map is the early depiction of what is present day Alaska which is patterned after Mullers epic map of 1750 which was the first to show the Russian discoveries, which are noted here. A very interesting Northwest Passage is shown going from Repulse Bay in the north part of Hudsons Bay over into the Arctic Ocean at a place called Cape Fowler. Good detail of Baffins Bay and Hudson Bay. Ref: Wagner (NW) #637 (A+) $275

(OC) Depicts the coastlines of North America and Asia with the routes of Cook and Bering shown and colored. Large inset Plan de lEntrée de Nootka. Modern coloring with a bit of offsetting. Tiny bit of worming in wide margins, well outside map. (B) $85

(BW) Interesting copper engraving depicting the discoveries in Alaska and the Bering Strait. (A+) $75
30. North America, northwestern (Chart of the Northern Passage between Asia & America), Thomson, New General Atlas, London, [1822]. 23 x 19". (OC) Very informative map showing the development of the Alaskan and northwest coastline. Alaska is still a bit misshapen. Many fascinating notations in the interior such as, "Mountains with bright stones", "According to Indian Report, a Sea a short way to the West". Browning on fold, else very good. (OC) Map shows the Republic of Texas, Mexico in control of the Southwest, Alaska as Amerique Russe, and the U.S. extending into todays British Columbia. Surrounded by beautifully engraved scenes (uncolored) of North & Central America including local animals and a Mayan Temple. A very popular and decorative 19th Century map.
