(FC) Regional map with inset of the Isthmus of Darien showing a railway through Panama. Margins trimmed at neatline, as issued, abrasion affection border at top. (B) $20
140. Mexico and the West Indies (Culiacanae, Americae Regionis Discriptio (and) Hispaniolae, Cubae, Aliarumque Insularum Circumiacientium, Delineatio), Ortelius, Antwerp, 1579. 19.7 x 14". (FC) Two great maps within one border. 1st covers the region of western Mexico around Culiacan and the 2nd is the Greater Antilles. This important map is the first detailed map of the Caribbean and one of the first to detail western Mexico. Includes an interesting error in that the Tropic of Capricorn is shown on the Mexican map where the Tropic of Cancer should be. No text on verso. Fine original color. Archivally matted. (PC) Excellent detail with scores of tiny islands shown. Large inset of Jamaica. Colored to show European possession with a color key. (A+) $35
142. West Indies (Dominia Anglorum in praecipuis Insulis Americae), Homann Heirs, Nuremberg, ca. 1750. 21.7 x 19.2". (OC) Sheet with five individual maps of Jamaica, Bermuda, Antigua, Barbados and St. Christopher. With a large decorative title cartouche. Each map is very detailed and includes a compass rose. Toned with several very old repairs including replaced paper in two missing corners, which affect some place names on the map. Presentable, but could use professional repair. (C) $200

(OC) Fine map of the island surrounded by steel engraved vignettes of Port Royal Harbour, the seal of the colony, Kingston, Port Antonio, a flying fish, & a sugar mill. Decorative, delicately engraved border. Minor toning on fold and a couple of spots in margin, else very good. (A) $75

147. South America (America Meridionalis), Mercator, Amsterdam, ca. 1630. 19.2 x 14". (FC) Beautiful copper engraved map of the continent. The Strait of Magellan is show but Tierra Del Fuego is a large southern continent. Very decorative with an inset of the city of Cuzco, ships, sea monsters and cartouches. Nice late coloring. Two tiny wormholes in margin and a faint library stamp in ocean, else fine. (A) See below. $650-750 [Click here to view image of the map]

(BW) The entire continent in fine detail. Locates Jesuit Settlements in the interior, a huge imaginary lake east of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Includes the Galapagos Islands. Very decorative cartouche with fancy titling. Bound into the original September, 1749 Gentlemans Magazine, with related article. Also with beautiful engraving of The Shield of Achilles. A fine issue. Extends south from Bolivian border to below Is. Chiloe and the Bay of St Antonio.
