188. England and Wales (L’Angleterre), R. de Vaugondy, Paris, ca. 1750. 8.7 x 9.2". (OC) Attractive map colored by county with an uncolored, delicately engraved title cartouche. On a large sheet of hand laid paper. Tiny bit of foxing, marginal tear, well outside map, and a marginal split on fold with an old repair. Map is overall very good. (B) $95

189. England and Wales (A New & Most Accurate Map of the Roads of England and Wales), Anon., The Modern Universal British Traveler, London, ca. 1779. 13.5 x 13.5". (OC) Nicely detailed map showing roads throughout with distances "by the Mile Stones." Nice title cartouche with a horseback traveler and a table of counties, both with later full color, and a simple compass rose decorate the map. Light browning on fold with some chipping in margin with tiny bit of loss just inside neatline, all with an old repair. (B) $75

England (The Countie and Citie of Lyncolne Described with the Armes of Them That Have Bene Earles Thereof Since the Conquest), John Speed, Theatre of Empire Great Britain, London, ca. 1610. 20 x 15.2". (BW) Highly decorative map of Lincoln with an elaborate title cartouche, compass rose, ship, sea monster, city plan inset, and numerous coats of arms. Trimmed close, as issued. Overall very toned with a horizontal fold causing a break in the paper (with archival tape repairs). Centerfold also split with a very old linen tape repair. Needs some professional help to return to its former glory. (D) $350

(FC) Great little strip road map engraved on both sides and depicting the road from Towcester to Lichfield. Both sides fully colored with several compass roses, crests and coats of arms. Very attractive piece. (A+) $75

The following maps are from Camden’s Britannia published between 1695 and 1772. These well-known English county maps are nicely done copper engraved maps, each measuring approximately 16.5 x 14". They include good detail and a decorative title cartouche.

The following maps are from John Cary’s New and Correct English Atlas, in London, circa 1809. Each copper engraving is hand colored in outline and measures approximately 10.5 x 8.5". Cary is considered one of England’s finest cartographers. His maps depict each county with considerable detail, accuracy and clarity.

(BW) Beautifully engraved map of the region of Moray Firth including Elgin and Inverness and part of Loch Ness. Map attributed to Timothy Pont who did the original surveys of Scotland. The map is covered with engraved forests, mountains, and towns with a decorative title cartouche. Long split on centerfold, else clean and crisp. (B) $200

Very decorative with rhumb lines, a compass rose, sailing ships, two cartouches and a title banner all fully colored. Dedicated to George, Prince of Denmark. (BW) Very detailed sheet of the counties between Edinburgh and Dundee. Includes much of the Firth of Fourth. Pictorial cartouche features a stone ruin, man & woman and fishing boat. Ref: LOND-306. A few small spots. (B) $45

214. Ireland (The Province Ulster described), John Speed, Theatre of Empire Great Britain, London, 1611. 19.7 x 15". (FC) Rare example of this map in full original color with GOLD HIGHLIGHTING. Inset of Enis Kelling Fort, decorative title cartouche and a scale of miles with gold calipers. Further decorated with a sea monster and a ship. From an early edition with the imprint of John Sudbury and George Humble. Map is severely browned with some marginal chipping and one tear entering 2" into map, but the color is still quite good. 219. Baltic (A Chart of the Baltic Sea, Gulfs of Finland and Bothnia with the Sound, Drawn from the Best Maps & Charts), Thomas Jeffreys, The Gentleman’s Magazine, London, 1748. 10.2 x 9.4". (BW) Jeffreys is noted as Geographer to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Extremely crisp and bright impression. Lovely cartouche with fine title lettering. Extends from Prussia north to above Kemi, west to the Norwegian Sea and south to Denmark and northern Germany. Notation on map explains recent treaty between Russia and Sweden. Still bound in the complete Gentleman’s Magazine, March 1748. Re: GENT-55. Map & magazine are near mint. (A+) $175

Notation concerning the Treaty for Settling the Barrier in the Netherlands (1715). Very detailed and interesting. Folding, as issued. (A+) $400

(BW) Fine, early city view depicting a grand castle at the edge of the city. Several ships and boats are in the river and additional details include farms, livestock, windmills and a man & woman on a hill in the foreground. Further decorated with two coats of arms and a strapwork title cartouche. A couple of very tiny spots in image, but overall fine condition. (B) $275

Two strapwork title cartouches and 2 crests with an Elizabethan couple standing on a hill above the city. A very early impression with an overall gray tone inside the plate mark. (A+) $200

Three lovely, large cartouches and covered with engraved forests and cities. Has undergone restoration to fill worm tracts, which affected one cartouche that was colored at that time. Color bright, else very good. (A) $325

237. France (Descriptio Veromandvorum … (and) Governement de al Cappelle), Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1635. 19.5 x 15". (OC) Two decorative maps within one border. The first centered on Saint-Quentin with a lovely title cartouche and a scale of miles held by a gentlemen looking very much like one the Three Musketeers. The second map includes Marle, Laon, and Vernins. Decorated with three cartouches, all fully colored. A fine example of Blaeu’s work. Map has been professionally de-acidified and two marginal tears repaired, fine condition. (A+) $450

238. France (Picardia), Jansson, Amsterdam, ca. 1640. 19.2 x 14.5". (OC) Lovely copper engraved map of the region including Abbeville, Amien, and Laons. Map is decorated with a large, fully colored, title cartouche with a coat of arms and a banner style scale of miles. Very nice original color. Acid burned on verso and edges of paper from previous framing. Map image and wide margins unaffected. (B) $275
