82-321Cartouche.JPG (49731 bytes)321. Africa (Africa Secunum legitimas Projectionis Stereographicae regulas), Johann Mattias Haas/Homann Heirs, [1737]. 23 x 18.2". (FC) Extremely attractive map of the continent with surprising detail for its time. "Castell Batov" indicates the Dutch settlement at the Cape and Stellenbosch is marked. The most dominant feature is the large, fabulous cartouche. Ref: Norwich 83. A very beautiful map. Faint crease in map, minor soiling in margins with a professional repair of bottom margin. 322. Africa (Africa Drawn from the Best Maps by T. Jeffrey, Geographer to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.), T. Jeffreys, The Gentleman’s Magazine, London, 1748. 10.2 x 9.4". (BW) Very crisp impression, fancy titling and decorative cartouche. Good detail along coast and in the north, blank in the central regions. Locates the "Sara or the Desert." Includes Madagascar and extends to include Anatolia, Arabia, the Persian Gulf and part of Persia. The Niger River is identified as a land-locked river emanating from lakes with no sea outlet. The Ivory Coast is comprised of the Grain, Tooth, Gold and Slave Coasts. Still bound into the complete Gentleman’s Magazine, February 1748. Both fine. (A+) $150

323. Africa (Afrique), Bonne, Raynal’s Atlas de…Globe Terrestre, Paris, [1780]. 12.5 x 8.2". (BW) Fine, crisply engraved map of the continent. Shading in oceans and arrows depict the trade winds. Details are limited to the coastal and northern region with a mostly blank interior. (A+) $75

324. Africa (A New and Accurate Map of Africa), R. Wilkinson, London, 1794. 9 x 9.7". (OC) Attractive map of the continent with good coastal detail. Inset titled A Correct Chart of the Rivers Sierra Leone and Shebro. Nice pastel coloring. (A) $45

325. Africa (Dealer’s lot) Six maps of Africa and parts thereof. One of Mozambique circa 1780, others 19th century. Includes both black & white, full hand-colored and printed color maps. Minor defects, overall good to very good. (B) $75

326. Africa, Blackie & Son, The Comprehensive Atlas & Geography of the World, Edinburgh, [1884]. 19.5 x 13.2". (PC) Detailed map of the continent with three large insets of Mauritius, Bourbon, and Natal. Extremely good detail, even in the interior. (A+) $40

327. Africa, John Bartholomew, The Citizen’s Atlas, Edinburgh, ca. 1895. 16 x 12". (PC) Attractive, colorful map of the continent with insets of Sierra Leone, Mauritius, Ascension, St. Helena, the Seychelles and Amirante Isles. (A+) $25

328. Africa (Ile Bourbon [together with] Suaquen), A. Mallet, Description de l’Universe, Paris, [1683]. 4 x 6". (FC) Nice pair of copper engravings. The first is a bird’s-eye view of the island with a banner title cartouche. The second is a view of the city with several boats and ships in the Red Sea. (A+) $50

329. Northern Africa (Aphricae Tabula I), Sebastian Munster, Basle, ca. 1550. 12.7 x 10.7". (BW) Woodblock, Ptolemaic map of northwestern Africa. Large ship in the Mediterranean. Three binding tears on centerfold with some paper loss. Crisp impression. With some expert repair this will be a very nice map. (C) $75

330. Northern Africa (Partie de l’Afrique en deca de l’Equateur), Brion de la Tour, Paris, 1766. 10 x 9". (OC) Copper engraved map of that part of the continent above the Equator. Delicately engraved title cartouche. Two panels of French text at sides. Map appears to have been cleaned with some fading of color. Split on fold 3" into map & one tear inside map with a bit of paper missing. (C) $35

331. Northern Africa (Tunis), A. Mallet, Description de l’Universe, Paris, [1683]. 4 x 5.5". (FC) Two miniature views of the city. One as viewed from the sea and the other, contained in a banner above the other, is a bird’s-eye view depicting fortifications. Very attractive with ships, army camps and buildings. (A+) $40

332. Northern Africa (A Map of the Kingdom of Algiers), Anon., The London Magazine, London, 1775. 9 x 6.8". (BW) Shows the region from Rabat east to Tunis. Names the Kingdoms of Algiers, Morocco, Fez, Labez, Couquo, Tafilet, Tunis and Tripoli. Names many deserts and locates numerous Arab tribes. Ref: LOND-308. (A) $45

333. Eastern Africa (Abyssinia and Surrounding Countries), Rand McNally, Universal Atlas, Chicago, 1898. 12 x 9". Well detailed, fine coloring. Index lists divisions and cities. (A) $12

334. Egypt (Alexandria), Braun & Hogenberg, Civitates Orbis Terrarum, Cologne, ca. 1575. 18.7 x 14". (FC) Fabulous city view with the mosque dominating the skyline. The city is surrounded by countryside with people and camels and the foreground depicts many boats and ships. Some damp stain in top margin with a couple of marginal tears, which have been professionally repaired, now fine. (A) RESERVE $500. $600-650  [Click here to view image]

335. Egypt, Jeremiah Greenleaf, A New Universal Atlas, Boston, [1848]. 10.8 x 12.7". (FC) Crisp impression and delicate coloring. Good detail along the Nile River. Shows an ancient canal from Suez to L. Sheib. Includes part of Arabia with Mount Sinai and a large desert named the "Wandering." Keyboard style border. (A) $60

336. Western Africa, John Tallis, London, ca. 1850. 13 x 9.5". (OC) A beautiful and finely engraved map with original outline coloring. With four finely engraved vignettes in later, and very well done, color: Cape Coast Castle, Christiansborg, Sierra Leone, and Bakel. Includes the modern region between Dakar to Lagos and to below Equatorial Guinea. Extends north to Timbuktu. Fine condition less a light spot in title. (A) $60

337. Western Africa (Africa North Western Sheet), J.H. Colton, A New General Atlas, New York, 1855. 12.7 x 15.5". (FC) Lovely pastel coloring on this map covering from Tripoli through the Horn of Africa and including the Arabian peninsula. Inset of the Delta of the Nile. Colton’s distinctive border. (A+) $25
